This role sits with the Office of Sustainability, a group within SUI. 

Job Purpose:
The Office of Sustainability (OOS) seeks a full-time, continuous Sustainability Reporting & Program Coordinator to join a diverse team of dedicated professional and technical staff working to advance Stanford’s sustainability goals.

The Sustainability Reporting & Program Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Climate Action and is responsible for providing analytics and qualitative data for a portfolio of voluntary and regulatory frameworks. The position will also oversee the implementation of related actions in alignment with Stanford's Climate Action Plan. 

The ideal candidate will have excellent data analytics and storytelling skills, and will proactively work to support the success of sustainability reporting, scope 3 emissions analysis and mitigation, and climate action strategies. Primary responsibilities include overseeing reporting to voluntary and compliance frameworks, providing both data analysis and curating content as appropriate. Reporting frameworks include AASHE STARS, scope 3 emissions in The Climate Registry (TCR), the California Energy Commission’s AB 802, and more. The Sustainability Reporting & Program Coordinator will also oversee sustainability programs including the winter closure program and scope 3 emissions mitigation.


Core Duties*:
(30%) Sustainability Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Oversee sustainability reporting to voluntary agencies including AASHE STARS, Ivy+, Princeton Review, QS Sustainability University Rankings, EPEAT, and others.
  • Oversee AB 802 regulatory reporting to the California Energy Commission
  • Manage data collection and act as a subject matter expert in the Office of Sustainability for relevant sustainability reporting frameworks.
  • Maintain large datasets using various analytical tools including Microsoft Excel to measure Stanford’s sustainability performance.
  • Develop and implement calculators to advance data collection, analysis, and communication.
  • Develop in-depth scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions and resource inventories, overseeing annual greenhouse gas inventory for scope 3 categories in the Land, Building, and Real Estate department including but not limited to waste, employee & student commute, construction, and leases.
  • Oversee annual verification of scope 3 emissions inventory and reporting into The Climate Registry (TCR)
  • Develop relationships with campus partners to ensure efficient data collection processes.
  • Complete assessments and gap analysis, comparing performance to baselines and peer institutions.
  • Support ad hoc senior leadership sustainability data requests (e.g., compiling data relevant to Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability, creating or advising on presentations for Board of Trustees and investment group presentations, etc.)
  • Review and change procedures to comply with changes to emissions reporting standards or regulations.

(30%) Content Creation, Storytelling & Reporting:

  • Oversee Stanford’s response to sustainability reporting frameworks, curating content and preparing summaries and analysis for Stanford’s leadership.
  • Maintain the content of the climate action and reporting web pages on the Sustainable Stanford website.
  • Support the Sustainability Analytics Manager in summarizing trends and strategies around scope 1 & 2 emissions including Central Energy Facility energy consumption and outputs.
  • Develop reports and communications necessary for transparency and decision making.

(30%) Sustainability Program and Training Coordination:

  • Using analysis findings and projections, develop proposals and recommendations to guide strategic direction for sustainability projects and planning.
  • Coordinate training with various university departments to assure sustainability goals are met.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the Winter Closure Program including the communications and data collection necessary to achieve a reduction in energy use during the annual campus closure.
  • Participate in climate action efforts and advise departmental collaborators on how to drive and measure change; develop proposals and recommendations for sustainability projects within these work streams.
  • Coordinate with consultants, outside vendors and contractors to advance innovative climate action solutions.
  • Support the use of campus as a living laboratory for innovation, and work with faculty, students, and staff to enhance campus sustainability.

(10%) Misc Administrative Duties:  

  • Manage student interns as needed to support data collection and analysis.
  • Participate in campus committees related to environmental, climate action and/or reporting responsibilities as needed.
  • Proactively support the climate action and reporting team members’ responsibilities and daily activities on projects; provide out-of-office contact support.
  • Other duties may also be assigned. 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Prefer 7- 10 years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity in emissions accounting, GHG emissions protocol, and scope 3 emissions measurement and mitigation strategies
  • Academic background or experience in climate action, data science, environmental studies and/or sustainability,
  • Familiarity with common sustainability metrics, and a demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and time management skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, exercise judgment, be proactive and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Possess high degree of discretion and judgment; ability to resolve interdependent deadlines with tact and diplomacy.
  • Familiarity with California’s AB 802 is a plus.
  • Familiarity with higher education facilities management, business processes, and organizational structures is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts, push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, and lift/carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl.
  • Ascend and descend staircases.

The expected pay range for this position is $96,000 to $120,000 per annum.
