Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Sustainability Assessment and Planning Intern for Capital Planning & Development at Oregon State University (OSU).
The OSU Sustainability Office seeks a student employee to support carbon reduction projects, measure sustainability performance and execute related programmatic tasks. The Sustainability Office fosters a culture of sustainability at OSU, enhances student competency around issues of sustainability, delivers projects that reduce the university’s environmental impact, and communicates sustainability efforts to university and external audiences.
Position Duties
Work schedule can be somewhat flexible, but must remain responsive to workload. The successful candidate will work 10-15 hours per week during the academic year and potentially more during summer on the following:
  • Partner with the Faculty Senate Carbon Commitment Committee, OSU Sustainability Council, academic colleges and other campus departments to research, implement and promote projects and practices that reduce carbon emissions.
  • Help implement and improve OSU’s “green” building and construction standards, known as the OSU Requirements for Sustainable Development, and research other construction standards and best practices.
  • Assist with OSU’s annual sustainability assessment and reporting process, through the national Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System.
  • Contribute to other Sustainability Office outreach, events, and projects.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Clear and consistent communication and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Project management experience
  • Experience researching and/or implementing policies and practices for an organization
  • Excellent precision, attention to detail, timeliness and organizational skills.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems
  • Exposure to policies and/or procedures of a university or other large organization
  • Public policy and/or planning coursework
  • Basic knowledge of sustainability principles
  • Presentation, public speaking or effective meeting facilitation skills.
