Survey and Measurement Methods Lead

Job Summary

This is a hybrid position, requiring work in-person at Purdue campuses, in both West Lafayette and Indianapolis, Indiana, on a regular basis.

The Survey + Measurement Methods Lead supports all senior administrators and decision-makers (e.g. Deans, Associate Deans, Vice Provosts, Associate or Assistant Vice Provosts, Directors) in developing valid populate-based (aka, large-scale) survey methods to measure the satisfaction, value added, development, learning or other outcomes for all types of Purdue constituents (faculty, staff, undergraduates, graduate students, etc.).  When the staff member is not designing ad hoc or longitudinal, validated survey methods to measure a number of talent constructs related to student or employee success, they are enforcing and/or collaborating on standards of practice that ensure Purdue University is trying its best to abate survey or measurement fatigue.  Finally, they are responsible for ensuring that all data collected via survey methods are highly utilized across our entire university; they are not only responsible for the collection of data, but interpreting and reporting on the data in such a way that it is immediately applicable to our practitioners (teachers/educators, advisors, program staff or directors, etc.) in student, academic, and faculty affairs roles.


Responsibilities:
  • Handle the planning, development (including the question/answer wording), objectives or strategic alignment, and logistics of large-scale surveying practices that engage all types of Purdue constituents (students, faculty, staff, and others).  Ensuring that survey methods allow for adequate or valid descriptive and inferential analysis to interpret the meaning of survey data.  Lead the process of cleaning, documenting, and ensuring proper storage of survey data and related data on Purdue data warehousing solutions.  Will analyze, and interpret, and communicate the meaning of data collected via survey or other data collection methods to faculty, staff, and students across campus.  As appropriate, garner system-wide participate in the administration of valid campus constructs related, but not limited to:  Campus Belonging, Campus Well-Being, Help Seeking, Academic Efficacy and Rigor.
  • Lead Purdue in establishing standard and best practices around survey methodologies to combat the administration of poor surveys and survey fatigue, plus increase the use of survey results across Purdue.  Create sustainable (aka, evergreen), accurate, and engaging resources that educate our colleagues and senior administrator about the standards and best practices in survey methodology, research or inquiry, and assessment or evaluation methods.  Co-coordinate Purdue's Survey Oversight Committee.
  • Facilitate meetings, discussions, seminars, and other gatherings of educators, practitioners, and/or senior administrators to apply results from survey and other methodologies to their areas of work; i.e., ensuring that information gleaned from survey and other data collection methods are pragmatic and immediate applicable to their sphere of influence (e.g., teaching, learning, research, creative activities, service or engagement).

What We're Looking For:
  • Master's degree
  • Five or more years of experience
  • Documented experiences in statistical methods to validate the measurement of latent research constructs and/or cognitive and affective outcomes during college
  • You have employed surveys and other methods of inquiring about the effectiveness, outcomes, or impact(s) of educational and developmental interventions
  • Experience utilizing theoretical frameworks or paradigms to guide the development of data collection methods.  Ability to articulate when survey methods are appropriate (or not) and have experience advising a diverse set of decision-makers on which data collection method is best to use when exploring phenomena, their research question or hypothesis
  • You are an expert on the Qualtrics survey platform and can advise faculty, staff, and students across campus on the proper use of Qualtrics, survey design in Qualtrics, email distribution and recruitment, and data cleaning and export
  • You can repeat mundane tasks with consistent zeal, accuracy, and high quality
  • You are an expert in the use of R or similar statistical analysis programs for the purposes of survey data analysis, including but not limited to basic correlations and regressions, factor analysis, validity and reliability, and predictive analytics
  • You are an expert at static data visualization (using ggplot2 or a similar package) for the purposes of writing technical reports for campus clients and communicating/interpreting results of survey data analysis to other stakeholders
  • You are proficient at the use of SQL to store, retrieve, and join big data from our data warehousing solution
  • You can advise, support, educate and negotiate with educators and other educational professionals
  • Based on data collected, you can make recommendations on how to improve interventions that focus on developing our constituents' knowledge and skills
  • You have facilitated meetings, discussions, seminars, and courses or other learning/developmental interventions geared toward practitioners that need to reliably measure outcomes and make valid inferences about the impact of those outcomes on their constituents
  • You can host presentations or facilitate trainings by using meeting platforms (Teams, Zoom, WebEx, etc.) and appropriate applications (e.g., PowerPoint).
  • You have a practical or pragmatic understanding of the social, political, and economic issues encompassing the future of higher and postsecondary institutions.
  • You have an interest in, or you are passionate about, any of the following in higher education institutions:  equity, diversity, belonging, well-being, performance, or organizational effectiveness.

  • PhD is Psychometrics of Educational Measurement, Inquiry Methodology, Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Higher Education Administration or Program Evaluation and Assessment
