Responsibilities*

As a Surgical Technologist at Michigan Medicine, you will deliver exceptional care while handling the instruments, supplies and equipment during each surgical procedure. Working as a team you will work hand in hand with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel to assist with operative procedures and assure maintenance of all surgical instrumentation. You will be a part of a diverse environment that will anticipate the needs of the operating team, while monitoring and preserving the sterile field. What skills would you master?

  • Performing daily assistance with our state-of-the-art instruments, sutures and additional sterile supplies during the procedures.
  • Effectively turnover and transfer instruments to CSR/Decontamination.
  • You will demonstrate your ability to accomplish tasks in a calm and reliable manner while delivering excellent patient care.
  • The expansion of your knowledge and improve your skills on passing instruments, retracting tissues, and operating equipment during surgery.
  • You will be responsible for reviewing each case cart for the correct instruments and supplies.
  • Multitasking while keeping a detailed focus on the surgeons' needs for instrumentation and supplies as needed.
  • The ability to work under pressure and in situations that demand perseverance and stamina, while transferring patients as needed.
  • Capable of maintaining positive in challenging situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Surgical Technologist Intermediate

  • Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technologist program is required.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer relations
  • Must have a commitment to contributing to a positive department culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team in addition to being able to take direction.
  • Able to prioritize tasks quickly. 

Surgical Technologist Senior

  • Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technologist program is required.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer relations
  • Must have a commitment to contributing to a positive department culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team in addition to being able to take direction.
  • Able to prioritize tasks quickly.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Ambulatory experience
  • Experience in a Pediatric setting
  • Proven ability to scrub spine, orthopedics (total joint, sports medicine, arthroscopy, hand/foot) as well as others
  • Significant experience with any of the following: Advanced Urology procedures (pelvic reconstruction, genitourinary, erectile dysfunction, cysto/ureteroscope), Otolaryngology (head & neck, endoscopic laser surgery, micro-DL, sleep endoscopy, FESS w/Fusion, thyroid endocrine)
  • Recent experience (within two years) with any of the following: general surgery (minimally invasive, oncology, combo SON/PLA), gynecology (minimally invasive, oncology)
  • Self-motivated and excellent organization skills
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist certification program.

Work Locations

This is a 1.0 FTE (4) 10hr shifts with varying start times / Saturday rotations required.

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.


Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
