Position Summary | The School of Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) is seeking an MS, preferred Ph.D, or MD level surgeon for the Preclinical Research Unit (PRU) in collaboration with the McAllister Heart Institute (https://www.med.unc.edu/mhi/). The Preclinical Research Unit is a recharge facility that provides preclinical services to UNC investigators who require efficient, quality-controlled small animal surgeries and other procedures. A main focus of this position will be on approaches used to study heart and vascular function. These facilities are committed to enhancing and expanding the collaborative capabilities of research at UNC. The surgeon will oversee the day-to-day running of the core and communication with users and will train new core surgical personnel. The selected candidate will be responsible for tracking monthly usage, and will assist with monthly invoicing, and in writing grant applications alongside the PRU Director. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Candidates must be comfortable with handling mice and rats. Should have 5+ years’ experience in rodent surgical models with preference given to those with cardiovascular model experience. Candidates shall have excellent communication skills, and exhibit evidence of a service philosophy. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Prior experience with cardiovascular surgical models in small animals preferably with cardiovascular surgical models. Previous core director/manager experience preferred. We seek an individual familiar with some or all of the following procedures: myocardial infarction, ischemia/reperfusion, aortic banding, artery banding/ligation, femoral wire injury, carotid ligation, echocardiography and mini-pump/telemetry implantation. We also highly rate the ability and willingness to learn new procedures. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with investigators, administrators, and trainees, and having some management experience is preferred. |
