Supply Chain Analyst - Postdoctoral Scholar

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will conduct research related to supply chains of energy equipment and critical materials, including mapping material flows and assessing risk and resiliency, with a focus on how investments in various resources, technologies, or facilities can strengthen the supply chain. You will conceptualize and carry out analysis and modeling based on data collected from various sources and conversations with experts and stakeholders.

Research projects in this position may provide direct support to regulatory policy decision-makers. You will enjoy providing thought leadership in this critical area, performing rigorous and detailed analysis, and presenting the results to non-academic audiences in the context of real-world policy implications, in addition to more traditional academic audiences. This topic is a growth area for the organization and therefore the successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in developing and leading the research activities.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct research and develop frameworks for evaluating and quantifying the performance of supply chains, including dimensions of performance such as risk, resiliency, equity, and sustainability.

  • Conduct research into the impact of various supply chain-related investments and research initiatives on the performance of supply chains for a selected case study.

  • Develop reusable, extensible, and well-documented data collection and analysis processes.

  • Publish research results in white papers, reports, and academic journals.

  • Present findings at funder meetings, workshops, and academic conferences.

  • Adhere with EH&S and ETA safety guidelines and requirements.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to securing funding for future research in the area of supply chain analysis.

  • Attend and contribute to department, division, and area meetings, seminars, and events.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in industrial engineering, energy and resources, economics, or a related technical field (and less than 3 years of postdoctoral experience)

  • Demonstrated strong experience in research related to supply chain analysis.

  • Basic familiarity with all, and demonstrated expertise in one or more, of the following topics:

    • Energy infrastructure and related equipment

    • Battery technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes

    • Risks and potential disruptions to supply chains

    • Resilience in supply chains

    • Geopolitical concerns regarding supply chains in the United States

    • Economics of mining, manufacturing, and/or distribution of energy-related products.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Capable of working on multiple tasks and projects, and ability to change course in response to shifting priorities.

  • Able to conduct independent research.

  • Demonstrated record of successful publication in academic journal.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of at least one programming language appropriate for analysis of large datasets, preferably Python.

  • Interest in performing research that engages with and supports policymaking and governmental investment decisions.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374.00 / mo - $7,316.00 / mo  and is expected to start at $6,626.00 / mo or above.  Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
