Position Summary

On a part-time basis, Supplemental Instructors (SI) will be a team members – alongside faculty, the Director of Tutoring, and Academic Support Coordinators – to provide support to improve student success in high-risk content courses. The Supplemental Instructor will review course content with students, teach study skills and provide referrals to college resources. The SI will also collaborate with faculty to determine specific content reinforcement needs, provide faculty with curriculum feedback, and provide reports to faculty regarding student progress. This Supplemental Instructor is responsible for working with the Director of Tutoring to maintain the Anatomy and Physiology Test Prep Lab, and facilitate student, embedded tutor, and faculty usage of this facility.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • In collaboration with content area faculty, develop and deliver contextualized SI sessions that reinforce key concepts and information as well as support student achievement and success.

  • Design SI experiences (projects, discussions, scenarios, etc.) and evaluation measures (quizzes, practical’s/practicums, etc.) that facilitate student learning outcomes and provide feedback to the SI team (faculty, tutor director, etc.).

  • Coach students concerning academic achievement and learning goals (course content, requirements, grading procedures, attendance policy, etc.) and instruct students on best-practice study skills to empower student success.

  • Support and assess students’ progress in high-risk courses, develop success plans with SI team members (faculty, tutor director, grant director, etc.).

  • Attend trainings with SI team members (faculty, tutor director, etc.) to determine SI programming (content, days, and hours) and collaborate on ways to innovate SI sessions.

  • Create and maintain learning/study materials for students i.e.  manipulatives, worksheets, study summaries, learning games, etc.

  • Use of the college’s learning management system (CANVAS) to post SI session information (attendance, participation, session outline, and assessment materials)
  • Perform related duties similar to Adjunct Faculty.

  • Work closely with the faculty and Tutoring Center staff to help generate reports on impact of supplemental instruction on student success rates in given disciplines.

  • Other duties as assigned by Tutoring Center Director and the content area faculty.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge and skill in applicable course content similar to that of adjunct faculty, SI session development principles, and SI session scheduling/planning.

  • Knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices such as cooperative learning, diverse learning styles, tutorial units and related instructional learning laboratories, evaluation methodologies, and curriculum design and planning.

  • Knowledge of learning outcomes and assessment principles and skilled in session delivery and student evaluation.

  • Skill in student group leadership, collaboration, problem solving, time management, and critical thinking.

  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication, organizational skills, and maintain the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse group of students and stakeholders.

  • Skill in the operation of computers, job-related software, and preparation of reports.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Director of Tutoring assigns work in collaboration with the content Tutoring Coordinator and faculty requests for SI. The Director of Tutoring, along with the content Tutoring Coordinator, and Director of Guided Pathways for Students spot-checks completed work and reviews programming for compliance with college and grant procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include all Federal, State, and local laws; NASNTI Title III grant requirements, statues, policies, and procedures; as well as San Juan College security policies, FERPA industry best practices, social media guidelines, and College and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related instructional duties. The variety of tasks, knowledge and abilities required to perform this work contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to supplement content in high-risk courses to improve student success and completion.

  • Success in this position contributes to the successful provision of educational opportunities for college students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and distinguishes between shades of color.

  • The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent college credits in biology or the health fields is required. Professional experience in the areas of medicine, forensics, physiology, or related fields is preferred.

  • Experience sufficient enough to thoroughly understand the objectives of the discipline they are supplementing.

  • Minimum of one year’s experience providing student academic support services, preferably at the college level.

  • Experience using a learning management system for higher education environments and/or creating web-based instructional and supplemental materials preferred.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Prior teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred.

  • Ability to work at multiple sites (face to face and online) and on weekends and evenings.
