Position Summary
Responsible for all functions of the DCM mail and receiving centers, including daily operations, personnel, equipment, policies and budget. Operates the DCM loading docks to receive and accurately distribute animals, supplies, equipment, and mail. Operates under safety guidelines and meets established standards, departmental objectives and goals. Directly supervises loading dock staff.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates daily DCM dock operations and activities across multiple DCM receiving centers. Responsibilities include hiring, on-the-job-training, performance management, career development discussions, scheduling, and attendance.
  • Interacts daily with internal and external customers to deliver exceptional customer service to meet and exceed customer expectations. Ensures all work is performed according to Wash U, EHS, DCM approved procedures, standards and specifications. Provides a clean, safe environment for all personnel and visiting internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervises staff engaged in loading and unloading trucks, moving and storing equipment and supplies. Schedules and assigns tasks for dock planning and setup.
  • Coordinates, facilitates and communicates equipment and supply movement in and out of facilities and to the warehouse with internal DCM stakeholders.
  • Checks all animal vendor delivery manifests for accuracy prior to expected animal arrivals. Ensures all animal vendor deliveries are appropriately received and packing slips are collected to validate receipt of animal shipments. The dock supervisor will submit packing slips to the DCM Business Office and report any order discrepancies immediately. Receives animal importations for quarantine.
  • Responsible for maintaining all records pertaining to the center operations and for the reporting and accounting of all discrepancies. Validates that animal exportation paperwork on manifest and animal crates match and are accurate for courier pick up.
  • Ensures that all personnel are trained and in compliance with regard to safety issues, including the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Assists with the oversight by monitoring the development, implementation and maintenance of the asset management system for the department.
  • Responsible for monitoring the department’s progress toward the fulfillment of established goals and objectives utilizing measurement standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, or related field of study.
  • Five years of experience in laboratory animal science field or mail and receiving industry.
  • CDL license.
  • Understanding of regulations regarding animal shipping and receiving safety practices.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, including demonstrated supervisory experience and the capacity to function in a results-oriented environment while setting high performance standards for employees.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work for themselves and their staff. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail to assure correct receipt and distribution of critical shipments. 
  • Knowledgeable of various computer programs (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook) and institutional software.


Required Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent high school certificate.

  • Three years of mail service operations, shipping, or receiving experience. 

  • Appropriate vaccinations and other PPE are required through participation in the Occupational Health and Safety Program.

Salary Range
$20.15 - $31.26 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
