Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 50 faculty members, 44 SHRA and 37 EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 37 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.
Position Summary
The Supervisor of Undergraduate Teaching Labs position provides leadership and direction in the management of the Chemistry Department’s undergraduate laboratories and will be responsible for the undergraduate laboratory program on a day-to-day and semester-to-semester basis.
The Supervisor of Undergraduate Teaching Labs works with faculty to review, assess, plan, develop, and structure the undergraduate chemistry laboratory curriculum in support of the educational mission of the Department.
The Supervisor of Undergraduate Teaching Labs ensures comprehensive preparation for successful laboratory curriculum and classes such as preparing reagents and labs for experiments; implementing strategies for maintaining excellent safety standards, and assuring proper building services.
The Supervisor of Undergraduate Teaching Labs also supervises, trains, develops and advises teaching assistants and undergraduate lab assistants. This position is responsible for laboratory courses as well as developing and implementing the required training program for Teaching Assistants in order to successfully lead undergraduate laboratory courses. This position does require supervision of afternoon and evening laboratory classes.
This position will instruct undergraduate laboratory or undergraduate lecture courses, based on need. This will be accomplished as a secondary faculty appointment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent instructional or educational activities related to laboratory management or practice, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

M.S. degree or higher in Chemistry or a related discipline
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A demonstrated ability to effectively relate to faculty members and technical staff; and excellence in organizational, time management, communication, and decision-making skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of three years of experience in chemistry lab management and/or teaching.
