General Description of the Job Class

Supervise, coordinate, and participate in activities of the Courier Services, Duke Health System Labs (DUHS Labs), to transport and maintain logs of time-sensitive specimens and supplies between Clinical Labs-DUHS, DUHS hospitals, medical center, physician practices, buildings, and remote areas as necessary according to established schedules. Operate vans when necessary. Schedule operations and oversee the maintenance of vehicles.


Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
  • Supervise, coordinate and participate in activities of the Courier Services, Duke Health System Labs (DUHS Labs), to transport and maintain logs of time sensitive specimens and supplies between Clinical Labs-DUHS, DUHS hospitals, medical center, physician practices, buildings, and remote areas as necessary according to established schedules. Operate vans when necessary. Schedule operations and oversee the maintenance of vehicles. Plan and schedule work for Couriers ensuring proper distribution of work assignments and adequate coverage of vehicles and work locations.
  • Maintain operational records including, but not limited to, dispatch locations, specimen and items picked up and/or distributed, van reports, daily fuel reports, dispatcher log sheets and driver log sheets; verify accuracy of these and other records and ensure records are properly maintained.
  • Ensure routine inspection of vehicles to ensure that they are in safe and proper operating condition; schedule maintenance and repairs for vehicles.
  • Orient, train and instruct employees in the safe and proper operation of vehicles; proper, safe transport and record keeping of time sensitive specimens, communications equipment and facilities; monitor performance and provide follow-up instruction as needed; check driver's licenses on a monthly basis.
  • Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacation schedules, and over-time work schedules.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires the ability to provide instructions, prepare reports, and supervise and coordinate the work of others generally equivalent to a high school education.

Experience

Work requires three years of experience in transportation services.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Work requires a valid class C North Carolina Driver's License.
