THE DEPARTMENT

Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) serves as the lead organization for planning, developing, and maintaining the campus' natural and built environments in support of the university's mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP's history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs and functional requirements. FPM is comprised of approximately 200 facilities professionals (FTE) that also provides maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, fleet and auto services.

The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscape architects, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•             The incumbent will be under the supervision and reports to the Manager of MEP Services. The supervising electrician will be responsible for supervising skilled journeymen electricians and semi-skilled personnel engaged in a variety of general electrical maintenance and repair work. The incumbent plans, schedules and coordinates the work of multiple crews and projects; assigns work to qualified crewmembers; orders materials and equipment for the job; provides on the job training and safety instructions; provides input on performance evaluations of crew members; and monitors work progress. The incumbent also inspects completed work to ensure it complies with specifications, applicable building and safety codes and regulations, and sound trade practices. Prepares shop related reports and drawings; maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record keeping systems.

•             Maintains a safe and clean work environment; and works with other trades shops. The incumbent also works on new construction and remodeling projects by collaborating with engineering and design consultants; reviews and interprets plans and specifications; coordinates and schedules for utility shutdowns and tie-ins to meet the overall construction objectives; prepares cost estimates and minor design of electrical systems; inspects related work performed by contractors; and provides cost estimates of time and material for electrical projects.

•             Maintenance and repair work would include, but not limited to the performance of preventive maintenance work involving the campus electrical systems, primary high voltage underground duct-bank distribution system and transformers; testing fire alarm and smoke detector system; maintenance of interior and exterior lighting system; impulse clock systems; electrical circuit panels, switchgears and conduits.

•             Daily plan and organize all work and make assignments; order equipment, materials and supplies; provide on-the-job training; monitor safe work practices; review, inspect and test work; coordinate multi-craft assignments; provide accurate estimates; adjust to changing priorities; establish and maintain accurate records; establish and maintain customer relations; make operational recommendations; and investigate problems and follow up with solutions. The incumbent performs journey level electrical and related work as needed, including, but not limited to, minor remodeling of classrooms, laboratories and offices, including moving and installation of additional circuits. Review completed work orders to ensure material costs and labor hours are properly accounted for and close out WOs in a timely manner. Attends and participates in various meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.

•             As a function of this supervisory position, read and interpret blueprints, prepare legible 15% rough sketches of projects requested, monitor day to day employee performance, utilize the computer for entering labor time from work orders, assist in preparation of job performance assessments, update all employees with necessary information by way of meetings. Keep manager as well as subordinates informed by disseminating information. Provide input for developing standards for the University and assist contractors in infrastructure connections to protect the University.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent or college level education, electrical related certifications, valid California driver's license and proof of insurance.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of journey level electrician plus one (1) to two (2) years of supervisory/lead experience leading journey level electrician and two (2) years of experience with the following:

reading and working with drawings and specifications; estimating material and labor cost; assistance in the evaluation of contractors and vendor performance. Work requires thorough knowledge of electrical theory and methods, materials, tools, equipment used in both rough and finish electrical work and knowledge and experience with installation, maintenance and repair of transmission lines and electrical apparatus, and troubleshooting electrical systems. Must have a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California, and a thorough understanding of NFPA 70. Must possess a working knowledge and skills of effective supervisory practices and techniques and can effectively plan and organize workload. Must have the ability to multi-ask; able to read and interpret construction plans and documents, maintain good records, and perform simple calculations. Able communicate effectively with managers, supervisors, staff, contractors, and customers, both verbally and in written communications; ability to follow-up with customers on scheduling and work performed and provide quality customer service; establish effective working relationship with others; identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions; comprehend contractual requirements; and evaluate employee and vendor performance.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•             Five (5) or more years of journey level experience working in the electrical field.

•             Three (3) or more years of supervisory experience managing journeymen electricians.

•             Knowledge and experience working on medium to high voltage distribution systems.

•             National Electrical Testing Association (NETA) certification for performing High Voltage Switching

•             Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use Word and Excel

•             Strong working knowledge of work order management software or TMA.
