(Summer Temp) - Farm Enterprises

Brief Summary of this Position:

This position works to support the Berea College Farm Enterprise to ensure consistent high quality farm and store operations.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education  required to ensure success in this position:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required (also open to current high school student 16 or older)

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Up to 1 year of retail experience, preferred
  • Up to 1 year of food handling, preferred
  • Up to 1 year of horticulture production experience, preferred
  • Up to 1 year of livestock and/or row crop production experience, preferred

Special skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Maintain professional working relationships with store managers, staff members, campus employees and partners, and community members.
  • Understand how to work through situations independently seeking help when needed.
  • Embody the ideals of Berea College: (See Workplace Expectations, above)
  • Possess an interest and motivation in working with staff members and the community, while supporting the educational mission of the College and the department.

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Will need to get food handlers certificate through the Madison County Health Department if hired to work at the Farm Store. Training will be provided upon hire.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus independently
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather if on farm

Environmental conditions:

  • Mostly outdoors on Farm and Horticulture or inside at the Farm Store.
  • May be subject to loud noises
  • May be subject to dust, pollen, plants and animals if at the Farm

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Farm Store: Computer, Cash register, Good prep equipment
  • Farm Horticulture: Rototiller, irrigation equipment, wash/pack line, hand tools greenhouse systems and equipment, lawnmower, trimmer and computer
  • Farm: Lawn mower, trimmer, hand tools, fencing equipment (permanent and temporary), livestock watering systems, tractor and general farm implements

Primary duties and responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual msut be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Fulfill all expectations of customer service.

Perform all store opening and closing tasks without supervision.

Responsible for handling money including cash drawer and deposit.

Responsible for aspects of store operations in the absence of store managers, as defined by full-time staff.

Understand how to work through situations independently seeking help when needed.

Assists in inventory maintenance.

Assists in keeping the store clean and organized.

Plant, harvest, wash, pack and deliver produce

Water greenhouse and field crops

Maintain grounds

Cultivate and weed produce crops

Daily animal care, including feeding and water systems evaluation

Maintain grounds

Move livestock per rotational grazing plan Maintain fence

Plant, cultivate and harvest row crops

Maintain pasture

Maintain farm production systems

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
