Summer Science Education Assistant

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Government and Community Relations (GCR) Office and K-12 Programs Team has an opening for a Science Education Assistant to join the team. 

 

In this role, you will assist with implementation of STEM content for summer programs, specifically the Berkeley Lab Director’s Apprenticeship Program (BLDAP) and/or Quantum Computing Math and Physics Camp (QCaMP). Additional duties will include logistical planning of STEM activities and some content development with our data science and python course. Due to the number of summer programs hosted by the GCR K-12 team, additional support is necessary to successfully implement all programs. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Independently teach and facilitate STEM related content during program activities. 
  • Work closely with the K-12 Director, Instruction and Content Manager,  Lead Education Facilitator, and additional education staff to prepare program content, documents, and assessment tools. 
  • Support the coordination of volunteers that may assist with research related connections to fundamental content. 
  • Conduct literature searches.
  • Assist with data collection for education and assessment purposes including surveys and interviews. 

 

What is Required:

  • An advanced degree in STEM, education or related field or the equivalent of an advanced degree in science, education, or related field, appropriate teaching credentials, and relevant experience.
  • Experience in coding (python and/or R) and data science. 
  • Some experience with statistics and linear algebra.
  • Some experience teaching students in an informal or formal setting. 
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated excellence in collaborating effectively with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication.
  • Experience as a hands-on STEM educator and in tailoring written and verbal communication and presentations to meet the needs of diverse audiences. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office application- Word, Excel and PowerPoint: Google applications.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in STEM education of STEM field (physics, engineering, computer science). 
  • Experience in designing, fabricating and troubleshooting components for use in hands-on learning and STEM experiences. 
  • Experience working with out-of-school organizations and/or schools in Alameda and West Contra Costa Counties.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask.
  • Willingness to work and learn in a flexible, changing environment.

  • This is a full-time 3-month, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $80,856-$107,448 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
