General Information
Youth Programs, a component of the School of Professional and Continuing Education’s portfolio at James Madison University, provides quality, engaging programming that extends and enriches the learning experience of the PreK-12th grade students it serves. The Science Explorers Camps consist of 3 week-long summer camps in July- a day camp for elementary students, a day camp for middle school students, and a residential camp for high school students. Science Explorers Camps provide hands-on learning opportunities to 1st through 12th grade students and seek to grow leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow by building knowledge and curiosity today. The Science Explorers Camp Director will plan, coordinate, implement, and oversee the entirety of the Science Explorers Camps under the direction of the Youth Programs Director/staff.
Position requires being on site during each week of camp in July, including staying overnight with campers and camp assistants during the high school residential camp week. Position also requires prep work beforehand (such as creating the camp curriculum, schedule, etc.). and training the camp assistants in June.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create curriculum for elementary day camp, middle school day camp, and residential high school camp
  • Create a list of materials/supplies required to execute curriculum
  • Plan and execute a one-day training session for each of the camps for all camp assistants (i.e. elementary camp– day 1 of training, middle school camp – day 2 of training, high school camp – day 3 of training)
  • Attend required compliance training for working with minors along with camp assistants under the direction of YP Director/staff
  • Provide direct supervision to all camp assistants working the camps
  • Plan a field trip to supplement the high school residential camp experience
  • Create a camp schedule to be reviewed by YP Director/staff no later than three weeks prior to each camp
  • Manage the day-to-day operations for each camp on site, including staying overnight with campers and camp assistants during the high school residential camp
Qualifications
  • Significant professional experience in working with students K-12th grade
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering collaboration and a positive work culture
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational ability with solid attention to detail, and project management skills to manage multiple priorities at once

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
