Under the supervision of the Program Director and Academic Advisors, the Summer Program Residential Advisor’s (RA) will work with high school students from the Santa Ana Unified School District and Anaheim Union High School District.  RA’s will collaborate with the Academic Advisors and program staff to design interactive activities. RA’s will work to create an academically nurturing and rigorous environment that promotes critical and creative thinking, instills pride and respect for others and self, and provides participants with a space for leadership development.  RA’s will also be called to serve as academic tutors during classroom sessions and study hall.  The primary role of the RA will be to expose and help participants acclimate to the college campus environment, all while committing to expand their academic knowledge.
 
*Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period.  Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.


Essential Duties

  • Collaborate with program staff to design a summer program with residential life experiences.
  • Coordinate daily cultural and/or recreational activities for program participants.  
  • Attend regular meetings with program staff to discuss cultural and recreational activities. 
  • Prepare and submit weekly activities schedule, a week prior to scheduled activities.
  • Monitor student progress, attendance, and overall participation.
  • Live in-residence hall during July 7th – 12th and July 14th – July 19th and ensure the physical and emotional well-being of all participants.
  • Develop an academically nurturing and rigorous environment that promotes critical and creative thinking.  
  • Motivate and challenge participants to develop the skills necessary for college success.
  • Help participants develop a positive attitude toward themselves and their academic abilities.
  • Assess participant progress and development on an on-going basis to determine participant needs.
  • At the end of the summer program, assess each participant’s overall progress, strengths, and areas that require further development.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Experience working with first generation and low-income students.
  • Ability to work in collaborative environments and the ability to develop effective strategies for participant engagement and participation.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience handling stressful situations effectively.
  • Must be able to complete mandatory training on June 27 – 28 and July 1, 2024.
  • Must be available for the commuter portion (July 1st – 3rd) and the residential components of the program (July 7th – 12th and July 14th – 19th).
EDUCATION:
  • Minimum Sophomore standing or above with an overall GPA of 2.75 or above.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-15 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
