Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill up to six part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks) technical assistants for the summer of 2024 in the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) at Oregon State University (OSU).
Be passionate about food: Ready to work with (literal) tons of fruits and vegetables? Not in the field, in the processing facility. Lots to taste and experience seeing hundreds of types of fruits and vegetables each summer!
Be ready to learn: All kinds of skills are required to work in this position, even if you don’t have them, be ready to learn! Food safety, personal safety, leadership, basic chemical analysis, and detailed organization are just a few things required in this position.
Be sharp: Keep a sharp eye and mind, lots of details pass through in this position and need to be monitored for completeness and accuracy. Problem solving is a major part of this position!
Be Flexible: This is a fast-paced environment, be ready to adjust at a moment’s notice. Fruits and vegetables are on their own schedules!
Position Duties
  • Inspecting and inventorying fruit and vegetables upon delivery
  • Cleaning and sanitizing food processing facilities for food safe production
  • Sampling fruits and vegetables for basic chemical analysis
  • Evaluating fruits and vegetables for subjective quality attributes (firmness, color, flavor)
  • Washing, sorting, freezing, and packaging fruits and vegetables
  • Performing basic lab analysis of fruits and vegetables
  • Recordkeeping for all samples, analysis, and inventory
  • Organizing freezer space, lab space, and production supply space

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Must be a registered student at OSU, another college, or a high school
  • Applicant must be available Monday through Friday and occasionally on Saturday
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively in both written and oral English. Legible handwriting is a must
  • Ability to work in a group is required
  • Work will generally be Monday through Friday during regular daytime hours. However, workers may be asked to work occasionally on weekends if needed
  • Job may also be less than 40 hr/wk at times
  • When work is complete, the day is over. Working hours can be flexible if students are taking summer classes or taking vacations if previously discussed and when possible.
  • Job requires standing and sitting, interspersed with walking, bending, stooping, and carrying up to 20 pounds
