Summer Graduate Student Assistant

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Government and Community Relations (GCR) Office and K-12 Programs Team has an opening for a Summer Graduate Student Assistant to join the team. 

 

In this role, you will assist with implementation of STEM content for summer programs, specifically the Berkeley Lab Director’s Apprenticeship Program (BLDAP) and/or Quantum Camp (QCaMP).  Additional duties will include logistical planning of STEM activities and some content development.

What You Will Do:

• Independently teach and facilitate STEM related content during program activities. 
• Work closely with the K-12 Director, Instruction and Content Manager, Lead Education Facilitator, and additional education staff to prepare program content, documents, and assessment tools. 
• Support the coordination of volunteers that may assist with research related connections to fundamental content. 
• Conduct literature searches.
• Assist with data collection for education and assessment purposes including surveys and interviews. 

 

What is Required:

• Currently enrolled students pursuing a STEM or education degree at the graduate level are eligible to apply for this opportunity. 
• Experience in coding (python and/or R) and some data science familiarity. 
• Some experience and familiarity with statistics and linear algebra. 
• Experience with Jupyter notebooks, pandas and matplotlib. 
• Demonstrated interest and/or experience with science and/or STEM education.
• Experience and/or a strong interest in outreach and working with students in grades K-12. 
• Successful completion of coursework in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Proficiency in office software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Google applications).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Willingness to work and learn in a flexible, changing environment.

 

Notes:

• This is a full time, non-exempt from overtime pay (hourly paid), graduate student appointment. 
• Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.
• This position is expected to pay $64,990- $94,392. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
