Job Summary/Basic Function
This is a full time Summer (2023) Research Assistant position within the John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology and Agriculture (CESTA) at Central State University (1890 Land-Grant).
The Specialty Corn Breeding Research and Development Program is seeking a Summer (2023) Research Assistant to assist in the development of corn inbred parent lines and hybrid varieties with emphasis on optimizing grain starch quality. This is a plant breeding program with an objective of serving area producers and processors with an opportunity to expand their selection unique value-added corn hybrids using conventional breeding techniques to meet the needs of consumers and processors in the food and industrial applications. The successful candidate will assist the lead breeder with routine seasonal activities including preparation of seed for planting and harvesting research trials, developing parent inbred lines in breeding nurseries and other field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments.
The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic individual interested in a career in plant science. Preference will be given to a motivated candidate possessing a high level of attention to detail. The successful candidate will be willing to assist a lead breeder in a number of other seasonal routine activities expected in corn breeding program:
  • Experience or demonstrate an interest in expanding their knowledge in the area of specialty grains and their utilization.
  • Carry out field and laboratory activities with oversight and coordination with project director.
  • Preparation of seed for planting field research trials, hand-pollinations in a breeding nursery and/or greenhouse.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel will be necessary for designing, recording, and archiving pedigree information for designing field plots, collecting plant performance data, and grain quality data needed for selection.
  • Identify opportunities to improve overall efficiency, productivity, and organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Represent Central State University as an 1890 Land Grant Institution to the public including federal and non-federal agencies, and research, agriculture and industry interests.
  • Supporting the goals of the project through daily tasks may include, but not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment.
  • Assisting in planning, preparing, and conducting experiments.
  • Organize the laboratory, storage area, catalog equipment, order supplies, with a knowledge of budget.
  • Analyze data from field and greenhouse experiments using various computer program and provide support for the preparation of publications and presentations.
  • Maintain a field and laboratory record book as needed.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Interest in plant science with application in plant breeding and the seed industry.
    • Demonstrated ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on plot scale equipment.
    • Experience or familiarity of word processing and spreadsheet software.
    • Willingness to learn laboratory techniques used in grain quality analysis.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • B.S. in agronomy or related field with industry experience in Corn Production and/or Variety Development
    • Experience growing and maintaining plants in greenhouse Facilities.
