Position Focus:

Mental Health and Counseling (MHC) at Yale Health supports undergraduate, graduate, and professional students by providing individual and group psychotherapy as well as psychiatry services to a diverse, talented, and passionate student body of over 14,000 individuals. MHC employs over 70 clinicians consisting of LCSWs, psychologists, and psychiatrists and also provides high quality training to psychiatry residents, psychology post-docs, and post-MSW fellows. MHC is part of Yale Health, which is a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on the campus of Yale University. The Substance Use Coordinator will ensure that identified Yale College students who are at risk of developing substance use disorders are offered appropriate consultation, education, and treatment.

The Substance Use Coordinator will ensure that identified Yale College students who are at risk of developing substance use disorders are offered appropriate consultation, education, and treatment. The Substance Use Coordinator will provide clinical mental health care to Mental Health and Counseling (MHC) patients, with a focus on primary or co-occurring substance use disorders. The Substance Use Coordinator serves as the primary liaison to the university’s Alcohol and Other Drug Harm Reduction Initiative (AODHRI) to track referrals and follow-up care. The coordinator will also work with Yale College to identify campus trends with regard to substance use and recommended education and outreach needs.


Essential Duties

1. Coordinates with Yale College, Acute Care, and Student Health to receive referrals for students at risk for developing substance use disorders. 2. Schedules and conducts comprehensive substance use assessments for identified students 3. Provides clinical consultation to Mental Health and Counseling staff regarding co-occurring substance use disorders 4. Evaluates, assesses, and modifies psychological treatment plans. 5. Serves as the liaison between MHC and Yale College’s AODHRI  6. Maintains patient charts and reports in compliance with MHC standards. 7. Plans and coordinates the therapeutic activities of individuals or groups. 8. Oversees the development of individual and group psychotherapy plans. 9. Establishes positive relations with patients to administer appropriate treatment. 10. Develop materials, educational programs, and group events for students related to substance use. Coordinates with student groups to create educational programming and events that promote student wellness. 11. Serves as liaison to patients, families, and clinical staff on issues and programs about psychological services. 12. Coordinates with substance use treatment facilities to develop relationships and monitor/manage patient care  13. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology; or Psy.D. 5+ years’ experience providing clinical care to patients with substance use and co-occurring disorders.

Ability to design and implement workshops and outreach services designed to provide mental health education.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

College counseling center experience. Experience working with college-aged adults. Experience developing and implementing substance use prevention education programs.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as required in the State of Connecticut.
