Essential Functions : Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the Studios Technician provides technical support for faculty and students in the Art Department and all other educational activities as needed. The Studios Technician provides direct support for faculty and students in resolving complex problems concerning usage of machinery, electrical equipment and hand tools; provides instructional support in the form of set-ups of equipment, displays and demonstrations and other learning activities. The incumbent will move supplies into and out of storage as part of the preparation of materials for instructional use. Although most supplies are light, some supplies are heavy and dense: for example, 50lb blocks of artist's clay or 50-lb bags of plaster. The incumbent will Issue supplies to faculty and students and assign rental of student lockers. Responsibilities include: inventory control; storekeeping; materials and equipment purchasing and distribution; and operation, calibration, survey, maintenance and repair of technical and electrical equipment. The position requires working with mechanical and electrical tools and machinery, including wood shop, ceramics kilns, sculpture area, and with materials such as plaster, paint products, cleaning agents, and glazes.

Required Qualifications & Experience : Two years of full-time experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline in the Arts OR the equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equivalent in Art or related discipline which may be substituted for one year of required experience OR equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in Art or related discipline. Knowledge and experience: for traditional, experimental, and new technology as required for various instructional techniques. Knowledge of: principles of providing support services; common principles, methods and techniques; materials, supplies and equipment and their uses in Art or related discipline; and of industry standards for safety procedures on all power equipment and power tools. Ability to: survey, maintain and repair technical and electrical equipment; evaluate the materials and supplies used; learn to adjust and make minor repairs on equipment and hand tools; plan activities and prepare schedules; use methods, techniques and skills related to the Art discipline; supervise student assistants; write memos; calculate quantities of supplies needed or consumed; effectively handle competing demands and interruptions; learn procedures for basic maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical and electrical tools and equipment; oversee and instruct safe operation of equipment, including the wood shop for students and faculty; and supervise and instruct safe use of chemicals such as paint products and cleaning agents. Ability to lift 50 lbs. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
