Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking to hire for The Nevada Sagebrush. Bilingual media has become an effort various national, and Nevada based publications have expanded into, and The Nevada Sagebrush is no expectation. The Sagebrush hopes to reach a larger audience but by doing so in our audience’s language.

News knows no boundaries in relation to language, and as reporters we must inform everyone we can. Whether it's a protest on campus, issues facing marginalized communities on campus or changes to student life, the Spanish-language editor is responsible to report and translate news.

Applicants must be bilingual in Spanish and have experience writing and reporting news in Spanish. The applicant must be comfortable reporting on deadline, as well as a strong news judgment and knowledge of current events. They should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus. Applicants are expected to be able to write and translate articles quickly, concisely and accurately throughout the week and publish articles regularly on the Nevada Sagebrush website.

In addition to reporting the editor will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with other bilingual media sourcing outlets, the Spanish department and the Reynold School of Journalism Spanish media track professors. The editor will also be responsible for building relationships among the campus Latin(o/a/e/x) communities.

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit and curate content for the 2 to 3 pages of the Spanish section and update online content throughout the week.

  • Content should be local-oriented, and state and national stories should either be localized or run-in moderation

  • Content should be produced throughout the week

  • As much as possible, content should pertain directly to a university audience

  • The number of stories-per-week varies, but expect to be editing between 4 and 6 stories per week.

  • Recruit and maintain relationships with contributing writers

  • It is up to the editor to assign individual deadlines to individual writers

  • No matter what individual deadlines are, all contributor work being published in the Monday digital edition must be into the Copy Desk by 11 AM Saturday.

  • Online-first or online-exclusive articles are assigned deadlines on an article-by-article basis, but it is the editor's responsibility for enforcing these deadlines.

  • Be aware of trends in bilingual media

  • Maintain relationships with bilingual media sharing outlets, the RSJ and UNR’s Spanish Department

  • Assist in page layout, design and editing during Sunday deadlines.

  • Ensure all Spanish content is posted to NevadaSagebrush.com both in a timely manner and in a manner consistent with the quality and style guidelines of The Sagebrush.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 credits

  • Candidate must be fluently bilingual and have a strong command of Spanish grammar and language

  • Candidate must have strong leadership and good news-judgment,

  • Candidate must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online

  • Candidate must have experience writing headlines, or experience with or knowledge of SEO and the elements of a good headline.

  • Candidate must have strong voice when writing and work well under deadline.

  • Candidate must be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media)

  • Candidate must have experience writing copy for social media, especially Facebook and Twitter

    • Example: when a writer or editor submits a story, they must also submit copy for an accompanying Facebook and Twitter post beneath it so that the social media manager has a baseline with which to write and edit the ultimate social media posts.
