Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking to hire a News Editor for The Nevada Sagebrush.

The core of The Nevada Sagebrush's content is its news section. The news editor is responsible for covering these events, editing all news content, delegating deadlines and working well as a team.

Applicants should have experience writing and reporting news on a deadline, as well as a strong news judgment and knowledge of current events. Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus.

Applicants are expected to be able to write articles quickly, concisely and accurately throughout the week and publish articles regularly on the Nevada Sagebrush website. The News Editor will be required to write longform pieces, as well as breaking news.

Note: All applicants must submit 3-5 clips with their application. Clips must be work samples and 1000 words or less. Essays will not be accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit and curate content for the 3 to 4 pages of the News section and update online content throughout the week

    • Content should be local-oriented, and state and national stories should either be localized or run in moderation

    • Content should be produced throughout the week, with an emphasis on speed for breaking or spot news.

    • As much as possible, content should pertain directly to a university audience

    • The number of stories-per-week, varies, but expect to be editing between 8 and 10 stories per week.
       

  • Recruit and maintain relationships with contributing writers

    • The editor is the primary editor for any and all news-related submissions from outside contributors.

    • It is up to the editor to assign individual deadlines to individual writers

    • Online-first or online-exclusive articles are assigned deadlines on an article-by-article basis, but it is the editor's responsibility for enforcing these deadlines.
       

  • Assist in page layout, design and editing during Monday deadlines

  • Ensure all news content is posted to NevadaSagebrush.com both in a timely manner and in a manner consistent with the quality and style guidelines of The Sagebrush

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.

  • Candidate must maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 credits

  • Candidate must have strong leadership and good news-judgment,

  • Candidate must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online

  • Candidate must have experience writing headlines, or experience with or knowledge of SEO and the elements of a good headline

  • Candidate must have strong voice when writing and work well under deadline

  • Candidate must be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media)

  • Candidate must have experience writing copy for social media, especially Facebook and Twitter

    • Example: when a writer or editor submits a story, they must also submit copy for an accompanying Facebook and Twitter post beneath it so that the social media manager has a baseline with which to write and edit the ultimate social media posts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred

  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) is preferred
