Job Description


The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Student Worker for The Brushfire Literature & Arts Journal. The Brushfire Literature & Arts Journal is a student-run organization at UNR that publishes two journals per year (one per semester). All art reviewed and published by Brushfire is submitted through our website. 

With every new edition of the Brushfire, we strive to represent the diversity, originality, and dedication of our artistic community. As an ASUN organization, we also strive to be the creative literary and visual work outlet for our student body at UNR. Our main priority is to connect with the various art communities at UNR and throughout Reno. However, anyone can submit to Brushfire. We receive and publish art from across the country.  

In order to achieve our goals, staff and volunteers also collaborate with other campus clubs and organizations, to promote Brushfire’s name and purpose, and to establish good relations with peer art organizations. 

Collaboration is in Brushfire’s nature. Much of the work done will be with the help of co-workers and volunteers. What is most important is the drive to work in a team and work for the goals of this organization.  

The Literary Editor handles all concerns with literary submissions, including but not limited to: reviewing and editing submissions, communicating with submitters, and contacting and establishing a literary judging panel—which should consist of professionals in a literary field (e.g. professors, working artists in the community). The Literary Editor will oversee all copyediting operations for the journal, which may include, but is not limited to: copyediting all poetry, prose, and overseeing other volunteer copyeditors.  On a final note, the Literary Editor will work with the Editor-in-Chief to make any last edits to the final proof of the journal. 

All staff members are required to attend weekly meetings in which progress updates, announcements and challenges will be discussed. 

Responsibilities

  • Contacting and establishing a literary judging panel 

  • Reviewing literary submissions and contacting authors regarding their submissions 

  • Copyediting all prose, poetry, and written content selected for journal publication 

  • Working with Editor-in-Chief to revise and send off final journal proof 

  • Attending weekly staff meetings 

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno. 

  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 credits  

  • Effective communication skills 

  • Organizational skills 

  • Group Management skills 

  • Experience and/or knowledge in respective field of art 

  • A good understanding of the mechanics of the English language

Works 10-12 hours a week
