Job Description

Insight Magazine is the University of Nevada, Reno’s student-run feature magazine focused on local news, reviews, features, lifestyle, opinions, and our insight on topics. The magazine publishes four times a year (two per semester).

The position of Executive Editor is one that requires passion, dedication and a full understanding of modern print magazines. The Executive Editor should be an individual with interest, talent, skill, and experience with the field of journalism.

The Executive Editor is responsible for ensuring producing a set number of issues and copies of the magazine in a timely manner, and is therefore responsible for everything that comes along with that. From an editorial perspective, the Editor is charged with ensuring the high standards of Insight are upheld in every issue. The Executive Editor of this publication manages all of the day-to-day operations as well as oversees the appointed Insight editors, writers, photographers, interns, and volunteers.

The Executive Editor reviews all articles, stories, reviews, features and calendar events for Insight, for the printed magazine and the website as well as reviewing every issue before it prints and editing and approving the final design and placements of the issues themselves. The Executive Editor has the final say on what does and does not go to print, and as such, is responsible for every piece of content published by or in Insight.

Because of this, the Executive Editor must be generally familiar with media law, especially as it pertains to FOIA, potentially libelous statements, photo attribution, and copyright laws. The latter three, if handled incorrectly, can engender lawsuits and it is up to the Executive Editor to ensure that does not happen.

Ultimately, the Editor must be hard-working, dedicated, creative and passionate about the magazine, and about creating quality content that represents the students of UNR and their interests. This award-winning magazine is one of the best student publications in the Western U.S., and that legacy is upheld first and foremost by its Executive Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Smooth production of Magazine every issue, meeting all deadlines.

  • Copy edit all the articles before final print and making sure they align with the style guides.

  • Work closely with visual members of the staff to produce high quality images.

  • Writing or assisting in writing staff editorials or other editorial content as needed.

  • Hiring and Managing member of The Insight Staff.

  • Managing budget and coordinating with the printing company.

  • Run weekly editorial and budget meetings, and attend required Student Media Advisory Board (SMAB) meetings.

  • May also include meetings with other publications and administrations.

  • Other duties as called upon by the position of the respective student media.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must have experience with WordPress and the Adobe Creative Cloud, esp. InDesign and Photoshop.

  • Candidate must have effective leadership and communication skills.

  • Candidate must have good problem-solving skills and an innovative/creative perspective for design and troubleshooting.

  • Candidate must have strong writing skills and work well under deadline pressure.

  • Candidate must have experience with magazine writing or print journalism more generally.

  • Candidate must be familiar with Insight Magazine as a product, as well as what kind of content is generally produced by or published in Insight.

  • Candidate must be familiar with basic media law concepts, especially Libel and Copyright Law
