Job Description

Insight Magazine is a student-run feature magazine, where stories are written by students for students at the University of Nevada, Reno to be informative, conversational, and relatable. We aspire to be honest and thought-provoking by publishing textual and visual work. Those who contribute to the magazine have a rare opportunity to share their thoughts via physical print with the student body and across the Northern Nevada community.

Our team explores the craft of journalism through writing, photography, graphic design, public relations, and more. Insight allows students to become familiar with the world of publication by creating a magazine and providing them with real work experience to propel them in their respective fields. The Art Illustrator's primary responsibility is to produce digital art and media (drawings, paintings, illustrated edits) for the magazine.

The Art Illustrator will collaborate with the Art Director to enhance the spreads for all written articles and visual art provided by the staff, interns, and volunteers. They must ensure complete draft illustrations on time and clearly communicate the status of the illustrations that are being implemented into the magazine. This means that the Art Illustrator must adhere to strict deadlines and be comfortable in enforcing said deadlines amongst all contributors to the magazine.

All staff members are expected to attend weekly team meetings to discuss updates, announcements, etc. to uphold solid and effective communication amongst the Insight Magazine team.

Responsibilities

  • Create aesthetically pleasing illustrations and/or paintings for written articles and photo essays

  • Work with writers and the Editor-in-Chief to make a clear vision for each story

  • Update the statuses of magazine layouts in an organized and timely manner

  • Understand Insight Magazine’s policies and standards

  • Demonstrate attention to detail

  • Assist in the promotion and distribution of the mission of Insight Magazine

  • Disclose all conflict of interests that pertain to this position

  • Behave in a manner that is ethical, maintaining a high level of integrity

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno

  • Candidate must be familiar with Insight Magazine

  • Candidate must be familiar with Google Docs, Slides, etc.

  • Candidate must be organized, communicative, and collaborative

  • Candidate must be organized and flexible

  • Candidate must be able to work within a timeline and adhere to and enforce strict deadlines

  • Candidate must have experience with Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

  • Candidate must have an understanding for the principles of design

  • Candidate must have the ability to work nights and weekends

  • Candidate must commit to the ethical and moral leadership development of students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with an illustration portfolio are preferred
