Position Description
The Upward Bound Program is looking for Peer Tutors to assist High School students (Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago) with academic success strategies for the 2022 Fall Academic Semester. The primary responsibility of the Peer Tutor is to support students, provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of courses based on their personal area of expertise (Math, Science, and English/Language Arts). Tutors will meet with students (in-person and/or virtually) to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes and help the UB students solve specific problems. The emphasis and content of the tutoring session is determined by the student’s needs. Tutors will work with and gain support from the Academic Coordinator, and the Upward Bound Program.
Responsibilities:
• Assist students with specific course-related concepts and problems
• Provide subject-specific content to help students
• Facilitate development of effective, related study skills
• Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences
• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills and experiences
• Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
• Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
• Conducts one-on-one, small group and/or Drop-in tutoring sessions
• Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose
• Be able to collaborate with Academic Coordinator and Upward Bound Instructors if needed
Qualifications/Requirement:
- Current PNW Student
- Received an A or B in the subjects which you will tutor
- Understand multiple levels of subject tutoring
- Enrolled at Purdue Northwest University
- Sophomore (2nd year) student or higher
- Be able to mentor and support High School Students
- Be able to work virtually or in-person (via zoom or google classroom)
- Work-Study preferred not required
- Subject to Background check
Compensation:
- 5-8 hours per week (included preparation time)
- Starting at $12 per hour
