Each Student Success Advisor reports to a Director in Academic and Career Development. Academic and Career Development is part of Campus Career and Advising Services in University College. Academic and Career Development (ACD) facilitates University College students' academic and career success by providing programs and services that engage students in exploring and committing to educational and career goals, developing and implementing meaningful academic plans, transitioning into degree-granting schools, and translating learning to the world of work. ACD student success advisors and career consultants work in clusters of majors with similar themes and interests to help students explore their interests, choose a major, and create a plan to achieve their goals.

University College provides a common gateway to the academic programs available to entering students. Programs and services offered by University College focus on assisting students with the development of the knowledge and skills needed for success in the collegiate environment, including academic advising, academic support, career planning, peer mentoring, and new student orientation. University College also offers college readiness programs that focus on helping high school students to become college bound. University College is 1 of 3 units in the Division of Undergraduate Education.

 The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience while promoting on-time graduation for all undergraduate students at IUPUI. 3 units make up the Division: University College, Honors College and the Institute for Engaged Learning.

University College students are supported by student success advisors and career consultants who work in clusters of majors with similar themes and interests. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) cluster is the academic home for students pursuing majors in the sciences, technology, engineering, informatics, and computing. Successful candidates will be part of a team working with the same programs.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Engages in proactive advising, deliberate interventions focused on supporting the intellectual and personal growth of students, engagement on campus and in the community, career planning, and use of campus resources.
  • Meets with students multiple times each semester and integrates coaching strategies and academic advising to address those areas most impactful to student success.
  • Facilitates new student orientation. 

General Responsibilities

  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and one-on-one to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.  

 

EDUCATION

Required

  • Master's degree in related field. 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2  years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field. Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

Preferred

  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Indianapolis, Indiana

$40,000 - $49,552 per year based on education and experience.
