Summary

The Departments are centers for the exploration of the humanities in Asia and the Middle East. Faculty and students study the literature, film, language, religion, and history of these dynamic regions of the world. ALC offers instruction in the languages and cultures of Asia (including Bengali, Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese) and MES offers instruction in the languages and cultures of the Middle East (including Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, and various ancient languages of the region).

Under the supervision of the Curriculum and Student Services Manager, the Student Services Assistant will provide front-line contact for students, faculty, and department visitors. An enthusiastic, welcoming, and engaging personality is critical.

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will provide support to the Student Services team and report directly to the Curriculum and Student Services Manager.  The ideal candidate will provide a high level of service to students and faculty in the Departments of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) and Middle East Studies (MES).

The Student Services Assistant will support all aspects of the student services team, including but not limited to general event planning, administrative support for GSI hiring, placement test coordination, graduation admissions, and tracking student milestones. Additional tasks will include assisting with application files, preparing data for the Graduate Program Committee for faculty meetings, scheduling interviews and/or recruitment visits, and ordering supplies and reconciling expenses.

The Student Services Assistant also works collaboratively with the Curriculum and Student Services Manager to plan and coordinate events that build a sense of community among our graduate and undergraduate students. These include graduate student workshops, information sessions, social events, language/career fairs, and graduation ceremonies.

In addition to the responsibilities detailed above, this position participates in general support duties, including answering multiple telephone lines, shared email inboxes, and managing walk-in traffic. The person in this position is an ex-officio member of (and provides staff support for) the departments? Undergraduate and Graduate Program committees. This position will also be responsible for routine updates to the ALC and MES websites and the maintenance of several department email groups.


Required Qualifications*

A high school diploma. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds; strong public speaking skills; strong writing skills with the proven ability to draft original, complex correspondence; ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, and diplomacy; accuracy and attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions; capable of setting up/breaking down rooms for events with the ability to move items weighing up to 20lbs; adept at working well under pressure, prioritizing and handling various projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines; extensive computer experience with email, spreadsheets, and word processing; the ability to practice discretion when dealing with sensitive matters.


Desired Qualifications*

A Bachelor's degree; an interest in world cultures; knowledge of University policies, rules, and administrative procedures; familiarity with Google applications; experience with the student services and curriculum modules in Wolverine Access.  At least 1-2 years of experience working in an academic or student services department.


Additional Information

This position will work primarily onsite at 202 South Thayer Building, Suite 4111.  A flexible schedule may be available depending on the business needs of the departments.

This is a term-limited temporary position. 

The salary range for the position is $20 - $22 per hour.

The position will typically work 20-30 hours per week.
