Position Summary
The Student Mentor will support the academic progress and achievements of Governors State University students currently seeking a degree in Early Childhood Education. The Student Mentor will work an average of 5 hours per week at a rate of $35 per hour. Appointments will be made each semester with the potential for a total of approximately 40 weeks per academic year.
Responsibilities:
● Serve as a support person and positive role model for students in the program.
● Collaborate with lead mentor, faculty and university support services to ensure students are on track for success and help problem solve issues.
● Implement effective coaching strategies to support the students’ individual needs.
● Conduct outreach to assigned students (phone calls, teleconferencing and emails) to support the program’s retention efforts.
● Communicate and maintain relationships with others (e.g. colleagues and stakeholders) to accomplish functions and responsibilities.
● Participate in mentor team meetings (as needed).
● Work diligently to meet goals of the consortium.

● Demonstrate sensitivity to students whose cultural and educational experiences differ from their own.
● Ability to build relationships through empathetic listening, motivation, and support in order to create a respective and inclusive environment for all students.
● Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, organize, and prioritize tasks.
● Ability to remain flexible and handle vague or changing information.
● Be able to provide emotional support to students in the Early Childhood Program.
● Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the mission and goals or the university, program, and EC Consortium.
● Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
● Ability to teleconference with students and colleagues.
● Ability to work independently and with a team.
● Ability to take initiative.
● Ability to perform all the essential functions, skills, and specifications of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.
  • Some experience in the field of early childhood or elementary education.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency with job-related computer/technology skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends, according to program needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years of teaching experience
  • Hold a Professional Education License (PEL) in Early Childhood or Elementary
