Position Summary
The Student Life Specialist serves within the Student Life Office by advocating on behalf
of students when appropriate and necessary. Student advocacy will include engaging,
outreaching, and partnering with families, faculty, staff, and other resources. The position
will advise, support, and serve as a liaison for students experiencing personal, social, and/or academic difficulties. In addition, they will provide referrals to other campus and/or
community resources. Due to the personal nature of the position maintaining
confidentiality and privacy are essential functions of the job.
The Student Life Specialist will need to effectively communicate and build supportive
collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff guided by fairness,
accountability and compassion. Tact and discretion, as well as a professional, service-oriented
demeanor is required in conjunction with a clear understanding of the
university’s Academic & Non-Academic policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree: student affairs, counseling, or related field prior to start date.
  • One year of full-time, or two years of graduate-level work with college students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to connect and relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience/awareness of/with college student development.
  • Strong Interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Proven effectiveness in relationship building with a wide range of campus constituencies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of professional work experience responding to student behavioral concerns (students in distress, crisis intervention, and/or student conduct) in a higher education setting.
  • Understanding of best practices, policies, and legal issues in higher education.
  • Experience with Maxient.
  • Active listener.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    Ability to adapt workflow to accommodate emerging needs.

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit
The Division of Student Affairs’ role is to enhance and support students learning experience here at UWL. We work closely with faculty, staff, community members, alumni and most importantly, students to provide quality programs and services which promote learning, leadership, involvement, service and the celebration of diversity. The Division includes a number of departments: Campus Child Center, Counseling and Testing, Student Health Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, Residence Life, Student Life, University Centers, and the Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students office. The staff of the Division is truly student-centered and concerned about the holistic development of the student.
