Position Summary
Basic Function and Responsibilities:
Plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates strategies, services, and programs to provide a positive and holistic educational experience for students.
Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities:
- Assists in the cultivation, creation, deployment, and evaluation of the Office of Spartan Experiences programming.
- Serves as a collaborative partner in the development and implementation of leadership development programs and opportunities.
- Coordinates, implements, and maintains services managed by the Office of Spartan Experiences.
- Gathers information from various sources and synthesizes it to make determinations, decisions, and recommendations.
- Advises, consults, and represents the Office of Spartan Experiences with various constituents, committees, community, and University groups related to services and programs for the Director of the Office of Spartan Experiences and for the unit as needed.
- Assists in the preparation of materials for training, marketing, and orientation and conducts presentations on behalf of the unit.
- Serves as a unit liaison with the OSSA office (Office of Student Support and Accountability), as needed.
- Assists with the coordination of departmental outreach engagement for external programs and events.
- Develops, monitors, and controls Associate Director’s budget.
- Assists in supporting the formulation of strategies to support the transitional experiences of students and student retention.
- Provides support in departmental planning, monitoring, and evaluation and assists in managing organizational and procedural changes to improve effectiveness.
- Supervises a full-time staff member and a minimum of one Graduate Student Professional.
- Supports and evaluates special projects and programs as requested.
Communications – Interpersonal Relationships
Interacts with:
- Supervisor/Director - in order to exchange information, seek alternatives, and provide requested work.
- Students/Student Organizations - in order to advise, train, consult, and supervise.
- Co-Workers/Staff - in order to exchange information and coordinate services.
- University Departments - in order to coordinate programs and services and interpret policies and procedures.
- Colleges/Universities/Local and National Agencies/Professionals - in order to provide resources, consultation, and referral.
- Faculty/Administrators - in order to provide information and support.
- Students/Parents/Public - in order to provide information and consultation.
Responsibility for the Work of Others
Provide first-level supervision over regular and student employees as assigned to the position.
Responsibility for the Health-Safety of Others
This position has responsibility for the health and safety of others. Responsibilities include ensuring that proper policies and procedures are developed and maintained for staff and students’ health and safety.
Impact on Programs – Services – Operations
Improper handling of responsibilities may result in substantial financial liability as well as negative impact on programs, services, and image of the University. Well-developed strategies and programs will affect academic achievement of students and retention.
All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which is normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Counselor Education, or Social Work; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing and implementing programs, policies, and procedures and supervising and coordinating staff; or an equivalent of education and experience.
