Job Description:

The Coordinator of Student Leadership Development and Engagement serves as an active member of the Student Services team, across both KCU campuses, in building campus communities in which all students and student organizations are encouraged and supported in the cultivation of social, cultural, intellectual, service, and leadership programming. They assist with the provision of engagement and leadership development opportunities that empower students to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical members of Kansas City University.
Although this position is primarily located on the KCU – Joplin campus and reports to KCU – Joplin’s Assistant Vice Provost of Student Services since it supports Student Services efforts across both campuses travel to the KCU Kansas City campus, as deemed appropriate, is an expectation.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist with the facilitation of collaboration, innovation, and creativity among students, faculty, staff, and administration across the institution.
  • Build trusting relationships by acting with integrity, courtesy, and responsibility, even in the face of stress or demanding workplace conditions.
  • Assist in the design and/or coordinate student leadership development training, programs, and workshops to support student government representatives, club leaders, student assistants, ambassadors, and mentors in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform leadership functions.
  • Assist in the development and tracking of targeted learning objectives and assessment measures aligned with campus cultures for Student Services programs/activities to ensure alignment with CAS standards, best practices, and KCU’s s mission, vision, and values.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and the community to identify, track, and assess student community engagement opportunities/projects.
  • Support the embedding of multicultural awareness and responsiveness within all student engagement opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the Student Affairs teams gather and submit campus-specific student leadership development and engagement reports to both Assistant Vice Provosts of Student Services.   
  • Support the coordination and strategic alignment of campus-wide signature programming Homecoming, Follies, DO Ball, New Student Orientations, Senior Week, Commencement, monthly awareness & cultural programming with the Office of Student Services staff.
  • Keep a finger on the pulse of the students and report ideas, comments, concerns in a timely manner to your supervisor
  • Represents department and the University favorably and in accordance with established Core Values and expectations
  • Serve on Campus Committees
  • Contributes to a team effort by performing other duties as needed/assigned


Education & Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in higher education, business, public administration, counseling, or related field is required
  • Minimum two (2) years.’ experience in community engagement activities, events, and/or leadership development; performance of these duties in an educational setting is preferred .
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and multicultural awareness and responsiveness; experience working with underrepresented populations.
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of best practices for Student Affairs professionals.
  • Foundational knowledge of Student Development, Persistence, and/or Retention Theories
  • Ability to accomplish tasks and goals by multitasking and balancing skills in teaching, learning, programming planning, and event management.
  • Exemplary and proven organizational, leadership, and supervisory skills.
  • Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills. Must possess the ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including MS Word, Excel, databases, electronic communication, the Internet and web-based applications.

Physical Requirements 

  • Must be capable of handling long periods working typing and looking at a computer screen.
  • Must be able to commute to KCU – Kansas City campus as deemed appropriate.
  • Fast-paced environment. 
  • Demands normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity.
  • Some walking, standing, bending, or carrying of light items.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
