Job Description

The Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) is looking for service-minded students to complete a summer internship. TAMFS internships are professional positions that provide experiential learning directly related to the individual's academic education while accomplishing departmental objectives. Internships are paid ten-week professional placements. Lodging and meals are the responsibility of the intern.

TAMFS internships are limited to students who are at least 18 years of age and have completed their junior year of college up to second year post-graduates looking for professional experience.

This student intern position will be working under the Forest Systems Department in the Urban and Community Forestry program. The intern will work closely with Regional Urban and Community Foresters, local municipalities and other core agency partners. The intern will be exposed to many aspects of the Agency and our direct network.

Responsibilities:

-Support the development of statewide community forestry initiatives and dedicated funding projects to help achieve program goals and Agency mission. This may include development of tree inventory and analysis, community forest management plans and tree risk assessment.

-Provide GIS mapping and data support, assist in reviewing project submittals, review grant process and conduct pre-project and post-project oversight.

-Support Healthy Trees, Healthy Lives and other initiatives to engage new partners and stakeholders on topics, including but not limited to: ecosystem services (especially human health benefits), urban storm-water management/green infrastructure, development guidelines and recognition programs such as Tree City USA.

**Primary Duty: Assist with Texas Treesilience Grant. Intern will help create and prioritize a framework within Tarrant County that identifies disadvantaged communities most as risk for the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The framework will help develop strategies that address public health and climate resiliency through improved public and private tree management within these communities.

Working Conditions: Mixed office type environment with field work and occasional travel. May require exposure to harsh environmental conditions for extended periods such as smoke, wind, sunlight, rain and temperature extremes. Walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, reaching and kneeling. Lifting and carrying heavy objects. Driving motor vehicles for long distances. Operating computers with monitors for extended periods of time. Performs all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self or others in compliance with system and agency requirements.

Education and Experience:

Required Education: At the time of the application, must be enrolled at an accredited college/university with at least 30 hours toward a bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Science, Natural Resource Management or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a GPA over 3.0 and having taken course work in GIS.

Preferred Education: At the time of the application, must be enrolled at an accredited college/university with at least 80 hours toward a bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Science, Natural Resource Management or closely related field.

Required Experience: Three (3) months of work experience in any field.

Preferred Experience: One (1) year work experience or intern experience in natural resource management. Familar with TAMFS programs and operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Require Knowledge: MS Office

Preferred Knowledge: GIS programs. iTree software

Required Skills: Excellent oral and written communication and organization skills.

Required Abilities: Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Registrations, Certifications and Licenses:

Required: Valid Class C Texas Driver's license or ability to acquire on within 30 days of hire.

Preferred: ISA Certified Arborist
