The Innovation Academy is seeking peer mentor positions for our Excelerate summer program.
Excelerate Peer Mentors Position Overview
UVU Excelerate is an innovative, project-based summer program at Utah Valley University (UVU). It supports incoming UVU freshmen and current first-year students. Each Excelerate course features an exciting real-world project, allowing students to apply classroom learning to benefit community organizations.
Excelerate classes will be held from June 24, 2024, to August 9, 2024. Participants must be available throughout the summer second block, specifically on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Shift hours will vary depending on the class assigned. Hours will consistently total 10 hours per week, occurring between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. 


Summary of Responsibilities

Program Coordination: Assist in the organization and execution of logistical aspects of the program. Assist in planning and coordinating summer program activities. Assist in recruitment activities for program outreach. Maintain accurate program records, including participant lists and attendance records.
Participant Mentorship & Engagement: Maintain mentorship role with student participants assigned. Interact with program participants to foster a positive and inclusive environment. Assist and guide program participants to support their success and help to solve problems. Assist during workshops, seminars, and other program activities. Help plan and facilitate structured study sessions as assigned.
Communication: Effectively communicate with program management, professors, fellow peer mentors, and participants. Address participant inquiries and concerns professionally, maintain confidentiality, and communicate with a friendly demeanor. Assist in managing program-related communication channels.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications: Must be a current UVU (Utah Valley University) student in good standing. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently when required. Enthusiasm for supporting fellow students and enhancing their college experience. Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
Time Commitment: This is a student employee position with some flexibility. Students may not exceed 28/hours a week and will work an average of 10/hours a week.
Other Qualifications:
· Exercise integrity and professionalism while given the autonomy to complete work independently
· Analyze the needs of students in the assigned lecture and adjust session plans accordingly
· Speak in front of assigned lectures and actively communicate with students
· Conduct an observation of another peer mentors to provide constructive feedback
· Attend mandatory pre-semester and other trainings
· Cultivate professional relationships with students, faculty, and other peer mentors
· Maintain confidentiality
