Job Description Summary

The Student Crisis Support Specialist will primarily work within Residence Life as a University Campus on call staff member in the professional staff rotation (with on call duties 24/7 including weekends, holidays and school breaks) addressing and responding to campus crisis. In addition, the Student Crisis Support Specialist will support professional staff in Residence Life through a variety of housing related duties including indirect staff supervision, training, operations, student conduct, programming, marketing and other duties as assigned.
The Student Crisis Support Specialist is responsible for serving as a key responder to students in distress through being the point person for students who are hospitalized by visiting them in the hospital, facilitating resources and support such as transportation and access to prescriptions, working with the families of students, and also creating and sustaining programs and services that assist students in distress feel supported and connected to helping resources. The Student Crisis Support Specialist will also maintain contact and monitor compliance with success plans (example: Success Coach or Accessibility Services recommended making a tutoring appointment; Student Crisis Support Specialist works with student to ensure tutoring appointment is made and kept and lets Success Coach/Accessibility Services know the success goal is complete).

Duties & Tasks

  • Support professional staff in Residence Life through a variety of housing related duties including staff supervision, training, operations, student conduct, programming, marketing and other duties as assigned
  • Responsible for serving as a key responder to students in distress
  • point person for students who are hospitalized by visiting them in the hospital, facilitating resources and support such as transportation and access to prescriptions
  • Work effectively and compassionately with the families of students in distress
  • Create and sustain programs and services that assist students in distress feel supported and connected to helping resources
  • Maintain contact and monitor compliance with success plans
  • Represent the department, Division of Student Affairs and Saint Leo University at various events, committees, and state and national associations with other duties as assigned
  • Be an active, positive, contributing member of the department, the Division of Student Affairs and Saint Leo University

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution required; Masters degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years relevant experience in crisis management,  residence life or student affairs

Skills:

  • Excellent oral, written and analytical skills
  • Outstanding in person presentation skills
  • Skilled in motivating students and student leaders
  • Facilitate small and large group meetings effectively

Abilities:

  • Ability to manage crisis in a healthy, compassionate way
  • Ability to engage students, their families, and caregivers during times of high stress and crisis
  • Ability to create and implement complex events, programs, and services using detailed planning, creativity, and fiscal and resource responsibility
  • Ability to engage students and others professionally, warmly, and motivationally so that strong relationships are developed and goals are accomplished through healthy teamwork
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to manage interpersonal communication in a team environment
  • Ability to balance many tasks and responsibilities simultaneously
  • Ability to develop and implement creative and innovative programs and services in a timely way
