Job Summary: The Digital Services Student Assistant images a variety of rare and unique Special Collections materials following set standards. Performs set-up functions. Scans pages. Saves files in standard formats for storage and display. Arranges and describes archival materials in preparation for digitization. Records descriptive metadata for processed and unprocessed materials. Assists with creation of online objects to showcase digitized Special Collections materials, including research for digital exhibits. Prepares, rehouses, and transfers materials. Researches. Digitizes. Provides quality control based on professional standards.


Additional Department Summary: This position begins June 2024. The Student Assistant works in the Hoole Special Collections Library and is supervised by the University Libraries Special Collections staff.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student.


Skills and Knowledge: Strong attention to detail. Ability to work on tasks independently. Ability to learn new and complex tasks. Competency with Microsoft Excel. Strong organizational skills. Familiarity with basic archival concepts. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to multitask. Familiarity with formats held in Special Collections libraries. High degree of adaptability. Effective time management skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience with digitization of primary source materials, scanning equipment, image file formats, and photo editing software. Experience in a library or cultural heritage institution. Familiarity with Special Collections research. Ability to work consecutive semesters.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
