Student Assistant, Environmental Regulatory Compliance

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Environment, Health & Safety Division is seeking a Student Assistant, Environmental Regulatory Compliance to support the Environmental Services Group (ESG) within the Environment, Waste and Radiation Protection Department with various tasks related to environmental regulatory compliance programs and environmental monitoring. This position will interface with ESG program staff and will utilize working knowledge of environmental principles and practices to assist with compliance assessments, inspections, data collection and analysis, development of reports and procedures and other administrative tasks.

 

This role is hybrid: telework (data-entry projects) and on-site (sampling/inspections). You will be required to follow all security and safety requirements when working on site.

What You Will Do:

·       Perform data collection and provide support for environmental compliance programs, including but not limited to, air quality, hazardous materials management, sanitary sewer, and surface water quality.

·       Assist in preparing regulatory reports including analyzing and summarizing data, writing, editing and QA/QC.

·       Assist with inspections and compliance assessments: collect and maintain inspection records, enter inspection data into various software systems, submit maintenance requests and complete basic stormwater and hazardous material storage inspections.

·       Prepare and maintain spreadsheets to track compliance data.

·       Assist with collection of environmental samples under direct supervision of EH&S specialists or technicians.

·       Consolidate, review and edit internal documents including procedures and work instructions.

·       Review chemical inventory, work process descriptions and environmental hazards to determine regulatory compliance applicability.

·       Perform general administrative duties as assigned, including data entry, spreadsheet manipulation and preparing presentation materials.

 

What is Required:

·       Students in at least their junior year working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Science, Health or Engineering or similar technical degree.

·       Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and technical aspects of environmental science.

·       Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.

·       Ability to enter and manage data in various software systems and prepare graphical presentations.

 

Notes:

·       This is a part-time (10-16 hours/week) 1-year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

·       Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.

·       The starting hourly wage for this position ranges from $18.07 to $23.42, depending on the number of years of education completed by the applicant. Candidates should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.

·       This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. ·       The position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, combining teleworking and on-site work at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are based on business needs. Individuals opting for a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
