Institute Coastal Plain Sciences


Job Summary
 

The Student Assistant will support the Institute Coastal Plain Sciences on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2024. 
Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.


Responsibilities
 
  • Tutor all introductory level geology students enrolled in GEOL 1121 and GEOL 1340 
  • Must be able to assist in explanations of, but not limited to: 
    • Basic rock and mineral identification 
    • How to read and use topographic and geologic maps 
    • Basic math computations such as unit conversions 
  • Provide a professional, friendly, and quiet atmosphere to students who seek help 
  • Maintain neatness of the tutoring room 
  • Tabulate data and keep basic records of student attendance

Shift Specifics 

  • Up to 10 hours per week
  • Flexible with schedule of availability

Required Qualifications
 

Educational Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

Preferred Qualifications
 

Preferred Education

  • Minimum grade of "B" in introductory lever geology course or equivalent
  • Successful completion of course GEOL 1121 and GEOL 1340 OR have completed either GEOL 1121 or GEOL 1340 
  • At least three upper level (3000 or above) Geology courses with a minimum grade of "B" in each

Preferred Experience

  • Be familiar with the laboratory manuals and be able to complete all exercises in them

Proposed Salary
 

$10.50 per hour
This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
