Job Summary
 

The Student Assistant will support the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology as a Research Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2024. 

The Research Assistant will write analytic memos, maintain detailed records, and keep in regular communication with the research team. The Research Assistant will also be asked to help with other research-related tasks as needed, which may include traveling to the local courthouse to collect quantitative case processing data from their on-site computers.
Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.


Responsibilities
 
  • The students will use the NVivo software to code 300+ pages of court observation notes, collected during summer 2023
  • Key coding responsibilities includes observing themes and patterns in the notes, labeling cases, and providing detailed annotations.
  • Regular training will be provided by members of the research team
  • Duties related to other research tasks will be discussed as the project progresses
  • Students will be expected to maintain regular contact with the research team, including attendance at meetings and timely responses to emails

Shift Specifics

  • Up to 8 hours per week
  • Flexible with schedule of availability
  • Must have access to a laptop or be willing to regularly travel to campus to use campus computers
  • Must have a flexible schedule and be able to commute to and from courts in Statesboro and neighboring cities/towns

Required Qualifications
 

Educational Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

Preferred Qualifications
 

Preferred Education

  • Must be an undergraduate student in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia Southern University
  • Completion of CRJU 3110 (Legal Process) and 3234 (Research Methods).

Proposed Salary
 

$15.00 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
