About the Department
 

The CCAM is comprised of faculty from numerous departments in the physical and biological sciences divisions of the University of Chicago, with a core group in the departments of statistics, mathematics and computer science. Some of our faculty also hold appointments at the Toyota Technological Institute (TTIC), Argonne National Lab, and the James Franck Institute. Faculty research touches on computation, applied mathematics, statistics, data science, and mathematical modeling for scientific applications.


Job Summary
 

Under the direction of the Director of the Committee, the Student Affairs Administrator (SAA) manages a variety of student services and departmental activities for the Committee of Computational and Applied Mathematics (CCAM), including support of Masters and PhD students, and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the CCAM admissions committee, including graduate student application management and reporting through the Slate system, and organizing PhD admitted student visits. 

  • Manages communications and the planning and scheduling of orientation activities for matriculating PhD students, as well as communications and events for students in the undergraduate major.

  • Manages course scheduling; manages student academic records and the quarterly registration process for PhD students through the University’s Academic Information System; facilitates the quarterly degree audit process for graduating students; and manages quarterly financial aid for PhD students. 

  • Responsible for annual CCAM entries in the College Catalog and Graduate Announcements.

  • Develops programs to build community within the graduate student populations.

  • Addresses student concerns as they develop in coordination with appropriate University offices. Resolves or oversees the resolution of issues related to, but not limited to: course selection, degree requirements, pass/fail requests, student registration and bursar account issues, and leaves and reinstatements.

  • Responds to inquiries from current and prospective students, as well as alumni. 

  • Develops positive and active working relationships with internal and external constituents including but not limited to the PSD Dean of Students and College Dean of Students offices, Registrar, UChicagoGRAD and Career Advancement, Student Health and Counseling Services, Office of International Affairs, and others to create synergies across departments related to programming, resolution of student issues, and other matters of common interest.

  • Supports the development of program content for the website and other communication channels and will be responsible for web content maintenance.

  • Assists and coordinates the Committee's administrative activities, as well as travel and logistical needs of visitors and faculty, including processing reimbursements; plans and organizes seminars, conferences, special events, and meetings.

  • Provides administrative support for the (CCAM) and student support for Masters and the Ph.D. programs.

  • Manages a variety of student services and CCAM activities.

  • Solves problems in areas such as academic and administrative policy, student admissions, curriculum research and development, and budget development.

  • Recommends process improvements for programs that relate to critical student-life improvement, including emergency management, accommodations for students with disabilities, and/or the administration of health care services and programs for students.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

  • Administrative experience in a student affairs, academic support, or closely-related environment.

  • Event planning.

  • Experience with standard computer programs (e.g. MS Office Word, and Excel, standard email and internet applications).
