Salary Range: $5025 - $7159/Monthly
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; temporary appointment expires on or before one year from date of hire; may be extended, may become permanent. Exempt classification.
Essential Functions: Cal State LA seeks a full-time Student Advisor for the Prison B.A. Graduation Initiative - the first in-person bachelor's degree completion program for incarcerated students in California. The program, which is currently operating at Lancaster State Prison and will soon expand to other prison sites, offers face-to-face instruction in prison, taught by Cal State LA faculty. The program transforms lives by providing students with greater opportunity and hope. To date, 37 program participants have graduated with their BA degree.
Under the supervision of the Program Manager for the Cal State LA Prison B.A. Graduation Initiative, the Student Advisor will serve as the primary and consistent point of contact for students enrolled in the program (both in prison and on the Cal State LA campus) from pre-admission to graduation. The Student Advisor will work with incarcerated students desiring to matriculate and graduate from Cal State LA, providing complex long-term planning and assistance in helping them navigate a pathway to a BA degree which includes: explaining the program to prospective and current students, providing them with information about course offerings, university requirements, policies, and processes; providing information about the admissions process and criteria to prospective students and assisting them with the application process, including retrieving transcripts and advising them about their program eligibility based on a preliminary analysis; providing student advisement and guidance in person (both in prison and on the Cal State LA campus) in individual and group sessions, as well as in workshops; helping students understand financial aid processes and how to complete a FAFSA; helping students make progress towards their degree and monitoring their progress, including reviewing course grades and performing graduation checks; supporting the transition for students who are released from prison and will continue their studies on the Cal State LA campus; mediating and resolving complex student issues and providing referrals to appropriate campus resources; and conducing data collection and reporting regarding student interactions. Other duties include participating in internal and external program-related meetings and activities as needed. The incumbent will keep current on university policies and procedures and provide input during department and program ¬related meetings, as requested.
Required Qualifications & Experience: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or University in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Two years of full-time professional experience in one of the student services areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Familiar with CSU and Cal State LA general education, transfer and graduation requirements. Experience working with diverse student population, especially systems impacted individuals. Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior, and individual counseling techniques. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Excellent judgment and ability to handle sensitive situations with compassion and care. Excellent organizational skills and able to prioritize and complete work in a timely manner. Demonstrated experience presenting information to individuals and groups. Must have a commitment to student success. Demonstrated interest and ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who may apply for the position.
Desired Qualifications: Understanding of the state and local prison systems is highly desirable.
