Job Description

Position DescriptionThe strategic communications specialist reports to the chief communications officer and is responsible for assisting in the development of strategic communications and marketing content that elevates the institutional profile of Fort Hays State University.  Efforts include researching and writing articles in support of university content marketing efforts, magazine and marketing copywriting, writing press releases, media relations and earned media strategy development, and media and social media monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in English, Creative Writing, Communications, Marketing or related field. Minimum one year of relevant experience. This may include experience writing marketing or communications content.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in English, Creative Writing, Communications, Marketing or related field
  • More than one-year of experience in strategic communications
  • Experience producing and publishing news, public relations and/or marketing communications
  • Experience writing copy specifically for number of channels including blog posts, social media, the web, news reporting, and longer form copy for brochures and magazines.

Duties include:

  • Developing communications and marketing content for distribution across multiple channels (web, email and content marketing, social media, public relations, media outreach, and internal communications)
  • Monitoring and creating reports on media and social media coverage of the university and its key competitors. 
  • Monitoring higher education, social and political news and issues to inform our efforts in developing strategic messaging and positioning. 
  • Assisting with the development of executive presentation deliverables including talking points, digital and print presentation materials.
  • Managing the university’s internal communications channels.
  • Participating in crisis communications planning, training and real-time crisis communications management.
     

Requirements:

  • Ability to write story-driven content that aligns with the institutional brand messaging concepts.
  • Working knowledge of uses and administration of popular social media outlets (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Instagram, YouTube)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse target audiences.
  • Strong interviewing and interpersonal skills that lead to establishment of strong working relationships with fellow team members, campus colleagues and the media.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and adjust to changes in projects and priorities.
