Description

Primary Function: :  The Storage Administrator’s role is to operate and performance-tune storage platforms across the organization to ensure high levels of data quality, availability, and security. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure storage provisioning, efficiency, and maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions:

Strategy & Planning (5 %)

  • Participates in and support capacity planning and development of long-term strategic goals for enterprise storage in conjunction with data owners and department managers.

Acquisition & Deployment (15 %)

  • Works with systems and database administrators to implement storage architectures that utilize industry best practices.
  • Installs and configures storage devices and corresponding software.
  • Implements redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of storage appliances and stored data assets.
  • Establishes appropriate end-user access control levels for stored data.

Operational Management (75%)

  • Performs tasks necessary to fulfill service level agreements with end-users regarding storage allocations, limitations, security, and availability.
  • Performs and tests backups and restores to ensure that enterprise data is effectively protected.
  • Communicates and enforces, through system procedures, data storage retention policies.
  • Follows change control, incident response, and testing processes for modifications to storage appliances and software.
  • Anticipates, mitigates, identifies, responds to, and resolves issues with storage devices, storage access, and data retrieval.
  • Researches and makes recommendations on storage products, services, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and predicts trends for storage equipment performance, space allocation, and data growth to recommend enhancements to the IT storage team.
  • Develops routines for end-users to facilitate storage best practices, including desktop storage administration.
  • Remains informed on storage laws, trends, and issues, including current and emerging technologies and best practices; advise, counsel, and educate executive and management teams on their relative importance.
  • Ensures that information storage measures and equipment adhere to all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Performs storage server/database transaction and security audits leading to identification and mitigation of security threats to enterprise data. Recommends and implement changes where necessary.
  • Creates required reports in response to business user needs.
  • Develops, documents, and maintains operational processes and tasks.
  • Manages and/or provides guidance to junior members of the team.

Marginal Functions: (5%)

  • Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and/or 5 years equivalent work experience.
  • Certifications highly desired (CompTIA Storage+, SNIA SNCP, Hitachi Qualified Professional – Storage Administration)
  • Good understanding of storage architecture design techniques, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring, and supporting storage servers and management software, including Hitachi Data Systems, VMware vSAN and Tintri.
  • Solid skills in UNIX-based operating systems.
  • Hands-on Fibre Channel, iSCSI, SAN/NAS/DAS troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with tape/disk drives and backup and restore technologies.
  • Ability to perform administrative duties, including Daily disk backups and Weekly and Monthly tape backups, of the Veritas NetBackup RedHat Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of change management practices
  • Knowledge of applicable data retention practices and laws.
  • Experience desired in developing and submitting storage audits and compliance reports to governing bodies, legal entities, and/or external authorities.
  • Project management experience desired.
  • Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Good oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skilled at working within a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to conduct research into storage issues, standards, and products.
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Highly self motivated and directed.
  • Keen attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in normal office environment
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and other movements with upper body.
  • Requires lifting of equipment in excess of 35 lbs.
