Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Office of Clinical Operations is responsible for overseeing patient care, providing quality assurance, maintaining infection control, administering regulatory compliance and preserving fiscal stability. The Office of Clinical Operations is an integral part of the School and their primary mission is to provide the highest quality education and training to students and to provide the highest quality dental treatment available for patients.
Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for all daily processing of sterilized materials for the Central Sterilization Unit. Decontaminating, assessing, cleaning, preparing, sterilizing, and distributing dental instruments are the primary job functions of this unit. This position will utilize quality assurance and infection control techniques, processing and inspecting dental instruments for broken and missing items. They will utilize knowledge of various sterilization steps while operating steam autoclaves and low temperature sterilization equipment. As part of the team, this position distributes sterilized goods to various clinics throughout the school. They will work with the team to train students from all backgrounds of study that rotate through the unit on CSU processes and procedures. The Materials Management Technician will assist the Compliance Officer, Clinical Operations, and Clinical Education personnel, and assist with training of rotating internal and external students DDS, DA, DH, Intern Volunteers baseline dental preventive use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), instrument care, and Infection Control protocols.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This candidate must be able to use a barcode system to track inventory and create orders, and provide customer service to DDS, DH, faculty, staff, co-workers, and patients. Use written and oral communication to collaborate effectively with all team members. Maintain a positive work environment that fosters inclusion. Input and output of sterilized instruments without compromising quality or the integrity of the sterilization unit or the dental school community is essential. Help reduce costs through collaboration with management and utilizing inventory tracking systems to manage inventories of both instruments and consumables.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Background in a professional dental or medical setting. Sterile Processing experience. Customer service experience in a fast-paced setting. Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, and Power Point, and Outlook.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work in a high heat, humidity work environment with steam sterilization equipment. Must be able to work safely around fumes, chemicals, vibrations, noise, and blood/body fluids. Must have strong hand-eye coordination, dexterity to wrap cassettes and work with small items with detailed precision at high production levels while maintaining quality assurance expectations. Must be able to maneuver supply carts weighing up to 200 lbs. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time with frequent bending, stooping, walking, and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive motion). 
Visual Attention, Mental Concentration and Manipulative Skills: 
Critical when ordering materials (catalog number, unit price, total amount, shipping address, delivery dates, etc.). Critical when preparing items for sterilization, sterilizing materials and distributing items for patient care.
Safety for others: 
Issued materials must be examined and determined to be in a safe and operational condition for patients and staff safety as well as for infection control. Work environment must adhere to all EOE and OSHA policies and procedures specific to the different areas to ensure safety of all ASOD staff. Adherence to HIPAA is crucial in order to avoid costly and lengthy litigation.
