Job Summary
The University Housing Steamfitter position will lay out, install, remodel, and maintain pipe systems for heating/chilling water hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. They will also install, remodel, and maintain steam systems within distributions systems and buildings to ensure adequate, safe, and operable institutional facilities.
Responsibilities include:
  • Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess and verify specifications and update blueprints, sketches, or schematics as needed. Discusses project plan with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs. Protects University Housing property and equipment from damage during assigned work by removing furniture, wall fixtures, and equipment from work sites if possible or covering immoveable items with protective clothes, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins, and erecting scaffolding or support structures in a manner to prevent damage.
  • Performs skilled steamfitter work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes including journeyman-level work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of high and/or low steam piping, heating water lines, threaded and fusion-welded gas lines, chill water systems and piping, boilers, and condensate piping in all University Housing structure by inspecting work sites to determine the materials, equipment, tools, and methods to be used, and develop a plan or layout for the work.
  • Completes assigned projects with quality workmanship by using hand or power tools, such as welders, acetylene torches, soldering and welding tools, pipe threaders and cutters, gas leak detectors, pipe locators, and appropriate chemicals to cut and join threated and fusion-welded pipes and install, alter, or rebuild piping, gas lines, valves, traps, drains, and other related steamfitter fixtures and equipment.
  • Reviews finished projects internal and external stakeholders. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations. Assists with documenting the cost of repairs by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job by using the work order system and providing periodic status reports to the designated supervisor.
  • Cleans works area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations.
  • Collaborates with and assists contractors as needed and recommends the use of additional departmental personnel or contract personnel as appropriate.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and services Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVACR) systems and equipment.
  • Contributes to the overall success of University Housing by performing all other duties as assigned.
  • Physical Demands & Working Conditions and Environment
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, stoop, crouch, climb stairways, crawl, turn, kneel, and balance.
  • Breathing masks are required to be worn during some construction duties.
  • Ability to lift your arms above your head in order to reach high difficult areas.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with one hand to be able to operate hand and power tools and manually complete paperwork such as recording items on work orders and receiving documents.
  • Must have sufficient physical flexibility to kneel, squat, stoop, crawl under cabinets and other low spaces in order to perform the tasks required.
  • Employee must wear safety toe shoes during entire shift and is responsible to wear additional PPE as determined necessary by employee/supervisor during the course of job duties.

Student Affairs Housing is required to conduct Post-Offer Pre-Employment (POPE) physical screening on all selected candidates for Steamfitter positions. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this vacancy must:
  • Possess a High School Diploma and the completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Steamfitter as defined on DWD website – https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/steamfitter-construction.htm
  • At least 4 years of experience working as a steamfitter upon date of hire
  • A Journeyman Steamfitter’s license with documented welding certifications or an equivalent license with documented welding certifications, such as a licensed Pipefitter, licensed Welder with 6-G Test, or licensed Welder with Nuclear Certification is required
  • Provide evidence of 4 or more years of general mechanical ability including skills in the use of welding equipment, acetylene torch equipment, pipe locators, related steamfitter tools, small hand and power tools, and mechanical equipment and materials applicable to the steamfitter trade is required
  • A working knowledge of building and piping codes is required
  • Have the ability to consistently lift up to 50 lb objects
  • Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges
  • Must be able to tolerate working in confined spaces in order to perform maintenance and repair work when necessary
  • Employee must be able to work in partially lit spaces, confined spaces, dusty and/or dirty spaces, on raised platforms/ladders, and in extreme temperatures
Preferred Qualifications
Highly qualified candidates will also have:
  • At least 6 years of experience working as a steamfitter
  • Associate’s degree in a related field
  • 2+ years of experience/knowledge of TMA Systems or similar work order system is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and/or willingness to assist in maintenance projects of varying complexity across multiple trade areas
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
Target Salary Range Adjusted 100 Hour Leave Rate: $52.46/hr; Adjusted 140 Hour Leave Rate: $51.63/hr; Adjusted 180 Hour Leave Rate: $50.80/hr (Hired individuals will get to pick their amount of leave time and will receive the hourly rate based on their choice.)
