Department Purpose Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owned/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Position has responsibility for daily programmatic & business operations for the UC Davis Orientation Program (9,600+ students & their families) and hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of career and student staff, including staff training. Serve the entire campus community in delivery of academic preparation, advising, transition & retention programs for new first-year and transfer students in consultation with senior campus leadership and academic & student affairs units. Job Summary Under general supervision of the Director, serves the entire campus community to oversee the daily operations, planning, preparation, staffing and implementation of the robust and complex new student & family Orientation program. Provides leadership, research and analyzes curriculum and metrics in accordance with CAS standards & best practices for OTR programs, college transition theories, and campus and divisional priorities. Directs work of Assistant Director and program Coordinators to maximize students’ engagement and deliver high-impact programs designed to prepare students for the academic rigor, build networks of community & sense of belonging, understand & navigate campus, resources & involvement opportunities, and center equity & inclusion in all policies and practices. Manages and guides academic support & retention efforts for new students and families. Responsible for providing independent consultation & analysis via strong collaboration & appropriate political acumen with colleges, student affairs & other campus units; to build consensus, interact & communicate with internal/external constituencies at all levels (faculty, staff, administrators, City of Davis stakeholders, vendors). Contributes to assessment design, implementation and reporting. Engages in data-driven decision-making in partnership about design and curriculum of student-centered experiences. Directs the recruitment, supervision & evaluation of career & student staff. Responsible for curriculum, instruction & assessment of student staff training. Serves in absence of NSAS Director & emergency response in coordination with other OSD staff. Requires extensive expertise in orientation, supervision, training, project management, change management, academic support practices, & student development theories. This position requires an understanding of a college student’s academic journey and expectations. The AD will work with the academic advising community to translate academic needs of incoming students and the departments that serve them. The position has delegated authority to represent Orientation and the department to the campus on matters of new student transition & retention issues, student development issues & peer training.
