Department Description

Native American Retention Initiative is dedicated to the academic achievement, empowerment, graduation and persistence of Native American, Alaskan Native and Indigenous student communities of UC Davis. The Native American Retention Initiative will serve as the point of contact department for tribal Nations and coordinate tribal affairs initiatives across all of UC Davis.



Job Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Strategic Advisor for Native American/Alaska Native & First Nation Affairs and Director of the Native American Retention Initiative, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for developing programs, events, projects, that support the success of Native American students and our campus’ tribal affairs initiatives. This position will be responsible for:

  • -          Conducting analysis and non-empirical research to support tribal affairs development
  • -          Support and provide oversight for key campus wide projects such as the campus wide Native directory
  • -          Oversee the development of programs and events such as Native graduation, Warrior Scholar pathways, tribal visits, and alumni development
  • -          Utilize culturally relevant approaches to support the Native American Retention Initiative and Tribal Affairs development

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Experience analyzing and extracting complex information to determine level and scope of impact, evaluate risks/consequences, develop creative solutions, act expeditiously; and to understand the factors associated with supporting the development of tribal affairs and/or student retention
  • Experience researching and analyzing information with the skills to think logically and identify anomalies, trends and potentially invalid data.
  • Writing and editorial experience to produce clear, well organized information; experience editing copy for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Experience using various software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, etc.) to accomplish assignments.
  • Experience working with Native Nations (particularly California Native Nations), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Organizations.
  • Experience managing projects, programs, and events in a dynamic environment.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Organizational skills to manage projects in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines, and to establish goals and workload priorities.
  • Political acumen and collegial communication skills to interact with faculty, staff, students, the public, and persons at all levels of the hierarchy (on and off campus) with varying levels of expertise, interest, and personal investment in the activities of the Senior Strategic Advisor/Director.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:            

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution or equivalent years of work experience.
  • Experience developing, organizing and implementing educational programs, workshops or seminars to enhance student development and retention with the Native American student community.
  • Experience working in a position designed to build connections and partnerships between university and tribal nations and communities.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • An understanding of the factors impacting the success of Native American and Indigenous faculty, staff and students in higher education.
  • Ability to communicate across cultural lines to include interpretation of research and policy between the university and tribal governments.
