Job Summary

Under general supervision, and in collaboration with Biological and Agricultural Engineering advising staff, provide comprehensive undergraduate academic advising and support services on a wide range of often complex issues for undergraduate students in the Biological Systems Engineering major. Responsible for interpreting, analyzing, and implementing a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements. Confirm completion of major requirements as part of degree certification. Analyze and solve complex academic problems and refer students to campus community resources. Evaluate and approve transfer credits. Provide support for undergraduate program reviews, course approvals, catalog updates and related activities. Plan/coordinate workshops, seminars, and conferences. Present at seminars, workshops, and conferences to support students.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime including evenings and weekends to attend/participate in events and to meet operational needs.
  • Occasionally travel to annual industry meetings.
  • Limited or restricted vacation during peak advising and admission periods and other programmatic deadlines.
  • Work in a demanding environment with multiple deadlines, frequent interruptions, and noise from competing activities.
  • This position is eligible for a Flex Work hybrid schedule; a mix of onsite and remote work, subject to change based on operational need.
  • This position is not eligible for a fully remote work schedule.
  • With the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment, the employee must provide their own workstation in the remote location at which they choose to work remotely that allows the same level of efficiency and effectiveness that their workstation in the office provides.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:

 

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  • Experience advising undergraduate students in a university environment, including degree requirements and advising systems to prepare official major certifications, and assist, guide and track students’ academic plans.

 

  • Experience with university, college, major, design, and general education requirements and their application to specific programs of major and automated student information systems.

 

  • Experience maintaining confidentiality of student records and knowledge of State and Federal Laws governing confidentiality of student records and University policies regarding Privacy of information.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and perspectives and to make public presentations, both formal and informal.

 

  • Analytical critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and determine appropriate level of advising or referral services for domestic and international students, providing immediate crisis counseling, including students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.

 

  • Skills using a variety of computer software, including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and web browsers, and ability to develop, organize and maintain complex record keeping systems. Mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, divide and to determine percentages, ratios and estimates.

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Experience with UC Davis applications, including BANNER, Student Portal System, DESII, OASIS, etc.

 

  • Experience preparing, submitting and maintaining department course offerings using online scheduling and online evaluation applications and working with University course registration procedures.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge of ABET criteria to develop and implement ongoing assessment plan and experience with program accreditation.

 

  • Knowledge of admission criteria for new students and articulation agreements with other university/college, transfer, and international institutions and the applicability of credit from these institutions.
