Department Description

The Orange Cluster Administration supports three academic units: Communication, Linguistics, and Political Science, and is comprised of 56 ladder rank faculty members, 12 unit18 and Continuing and Temporary Lecturers, over 105 nonSenate academic employees of varying titles per quarter, 14 FTE career staff, 105+ graduate students, and 2,500+ declared undergraduate majors. This position is a direct report to the Orange Cluster’s Undergraduate Advising Supervisor. This position will work closely with the Department Chairs, Orange Cluster CAO, Undergraduate Directors, and respective Undergraduate Affairs Committees.



Job Summary

Under general supervision, serve as one of four primary advisors in the Orange Cluster Undergraduate Advising Center. Provide comprehensive, advanced academic advising on a wide range of complex issues to undergraduate students in the departmental majors and support faculty members. Independently handle orientation processes, including freshman and transfer students. Interpret and implement policies and administer undergraduate activities for the department. Work with faculty on program development and administration. Manage quality assessment and policy development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience advising diverse students in a higher education setting, including academic planning and course selection techniques, study skills, and policies and procedures.

·       Experience analyzing and applying university, college, major, and general education requirements in an education setting.

·       Experience developing and executing workshops and presentations in large and small group settings with interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

·       Experience writing, editing, and proofreading to answer correspondence, write reports, and develop informational materials.

·       Experience using software programs (i.e., Microsoft Word and Excel) for word processing, maintaining databases, accessing student information, and learning new software applications.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, including the challenges faced by and needs of underrepresented students in higher education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience with student development theories and how they interact with various undergraduate student populations, including working with diverse student populations, identifying and analyzing specific needs of those populations, and developing/adjusting programming to meet those needs.

·       Experience in confronting a variety of difficult situations and individuals and making appropriate referrals for counseling and/or disciplinary action.

·       Experience with Banner, Degree Navigator, SISWEB, and faculty information on DESII.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of transfer admissions criteria and applicability of credit from other institutions, course registration procedures, and other information and available forms.
