Department Description

Department Purpose

This is a critical position with independent management responsibility for undergraduate advising services. Work is performed autonomously under the general direction of the advising Supervisor and faculty leadership. The Department of Plant Sciences is a large and complex academic teaching and research unit within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The Department has more than 65 faculty, over 500 undergraduates and over 170 graduate students. This position provides comprehensive, advanced advising on a wide range of complex student issues for undergraduate programs.

Job Summary

Under general direction of the Vice-Chair of Teaching and CAO, this position reports directly to the advising supervisor, CAO for administrative purposes and indirectly to the CA&ES Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs for the purposes of professional development and vocational guidance. Independently provide undergraduate academic advising and implementation of educational enhancement programs; serve as a primary resource for students, staff, faculty and general public; interpret, analyze and implement a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements; and analyze and authorize degree certification. Analyze and solve complex academic problems and refer students to campus community resources. Represent the department at student orientation and other events; coordinate and implement departmental orientation advising and programming for all incoming students. As a member of a team, support decisions on dismissal, continuation, readmission, and other important matters for individual students. Evaluate and approve transfer credits. Provide support for undergraduate program reviews, course approvals, catalog updates and related activities. Support instructors and staff in approval of new courses and course changes.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:

 

Minimum Education/Experience     

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and policies governing confidentiality of student records. Experience working with sensitive data and ability to discern level of confidentiality and keep appropriate information confidential.

 

  • Experience discussing and engaging in practices directly related to equity, inclusion, identity development, diversity, and cultural competency and humility.

 

  • Experience planning, implementing/facilitating and evaluating workshops and public presentations/forums.

 

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in the student academic advising process, goals and protocols in a higher education environment; analytical critical thinking and problem-solving skills to independently identify, interpret and apply complex educational policies and procedures to support academic planning and degree progression; ability to make proper referrals to other campus resources.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds in a helpful, effective and informative manner in person, virtually and on the phone. Ability to make formal and informal public presentations to a variety of populations (e.g., students, families, faculty, administrators).

 

  • Ability to contribute in a team environment, where collaboration, teamwork, and cooperation are emphasized to provide high quality services to a diverse clientele.

 

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Experience in supervision/leadership and human resource management skills to recruit, select, train, manage and evaluate student staff.

 

  • Experience evaluating admissions criteria for new students, of articulation agreements with other universities/colleges for transfer students, and the applicability of credit from other institutions.

 

  • Experience creating and implementing academic advising/student services presentations and/or workshops, e.g., on academic success, undergraduate research, study abroad, student leadership, student outreach/recruitment, etc.
